Spelling mistakes 'cost millions' in lost online sales (BBC)
By Sean Coughlan
BBC News education correspondent

An online entrepreneur says that poor spelling is costing the UK millions of pounds in lost revenue for internet businesses.

Charles Duncombe says an analysis of website figures shows a single spelling mistake can cut online sales in half.

Mr Duncombe says when recruiting staff he has been "shocked at the poor quality of written English".

He says the big problem for online firms isn't technology but finding staff who can spell.

The concerns were echoed by the CBI whose head of education and skills warned that too many employers were having to invest in remedial literacy lessons for their staff.

2. It gets worse
Both my children attend/attended the same CofE primary school (one has since move on to secondary school), and the number of grammar and spelling mistakes in the teacher-written newsletters the school sent home was appalling.

5. It has nothing to do with being unable to spell.
I can't spell worth a crap, AND am the typo queen.

And while my posts sometime reflect the above, when it comes to my job, I damn well know to take the time to proofread.

Not everyone cares enough to bother.
Not everyone can even make the time............... some folks have so much work dumped on them they have to wing it and pray.

And these companies who claim they CAN'T find someone who can spell are probably full of shit. IMO. The truth is probably more like they want perfection for some pitiful wage from someone doing 2 or 3 jobs at once.
