Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 02:46 PM by AsahinaKimi
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 jolted eastern Japan, including Tokyo, on Friday night, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage from the 9:01 p.m. quake, which registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Mooka, Tochigi Prefecture, the agency said.

The quake measured 4 on the Japanese scale in many cities and towns in Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba prefectures as well as Tokyo's 23 wards.

The focus of the quake was in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of about 60 kilometers, the agency said.

3. There've been hundreds much stronger than this.
6.0 to 7.0--and remember with magnitude, 6.5 is ten times more powerful than 5.5.

5. I keep an eye on this site...

The people of Japan are always in my thoughts. This is the biggest disaster I've ever known.

The Pacific Rim has been very active the past few days. We had several in SoCal today that were over 3.0, which is the point where I usually feel them.

7. I live very near the Palos Verdes Peninsula
Which is on the coast across from the second large island from the bottom in this picture. There is a brown colored fault line going through it... and a yellow and a blue quake indicator square above.

I'm fairly sensitive to quakes... I woke up crying very early this morning and when I checked the map upon arriving at my desk, I found there were a couple of quakes right around that time. Sort of creepy, but the human subconscious is never asleep I suppose.
