1. I think it's only part of the problem.

I've always enjoyed good westerns. Even so, I've never owned a firearm. I've never seen any need to own a firearm. I've never really even had any desire to own a firearm.

I think that western's depict, albeit with much exaggeration, the gun culture as it really existed in the western territories. So the gun culture existed long before there were movies or TV.
