At townhall, Obama says no letup on drug war. |
|
In response to a question, Obama touted the processes that have not worked for more than forty years to "reduce demand" and said he would not consider decriminalization.
What's that line about the definition of insanity?

6. He believes this on an ideological, almost pseudo-religious level. |
|
Many people say that President Obama doesn't have any strong ideological beliefs, save maybe a faith in the power of "consensus building" and "compromise" with his critics on the far right. They're wrong. You can't really be swayed by what President Obama says--you have to watch what he does.
Based on the past three years, Barack Obama believes in prosecuting medical marijuana and casual marijuana users with an almost religious, Joe Lieberman-esque type zeal. This isn't any issue that he can be persuaded on with logic or policy--this is a matter of blind, moralistic faith for him, and thus not amenable to change through reasonable discussion.

The "definition of insanity" is obviously false. People do get different results from doing something over and over again. We often call it "practice."
Usual rebuttal: With practice, you change slightly in order to improve.
Usual counter rebuttal: Situation X is also different each time. (In this case, X=drug arrests/investigations/etc.)

to my suggestion -- fast, large-scale crushing of major crime families, like the big bust today, would be my suggestion
get the major profiteers off the streets all at once, then put in a legal distribution system, preferably gov't controlled
some of the states could get up to speed pretty fast w. legal marijuana distribution if the stage were set
however i can't support setting the stage to make billionaires out of those who are destroying entire cities, towns, and states in mexico, we will not build peace on a bucket of mexican blood
when the other guy is chopping off heads, waving the white flag of surrender will do nothing in my opinion
don't you think obama has been pretty good at law enforcement, the BIG stuff, he got osama bin laden, he's rounding up a lot of la famiglia (can't spell it, so prob. spelled wrong)
why can't we give the guy credit? bush had years to do this stuff and accomplished fuck-all ZERO

And the bullets are the raison, d'etre. Legalize, and the destruction stops.
Bush didn't stop it. Lots of people went to jail. Lots of people got killed. Obama might do some things differently, but is after the same results.
Obama gets great creds for taking out OBL. Sorry, but the biggest criminals get to play golf with him.

the OP blamed obama for the situation, i promise you that obama in 2006, when the current war in mexico begain, obama was not president of the usa
the usa certainly has contributed to the problem in mexico and we should contribute to its repair

remove them, execute them, jail them, i don't care what...but don't make bazillionaires out of creeps who are destroying decent life for every decent person in northern mexico
i think it's fair and reasonable to round up and arrest/jail/execute the mass murderers FIRST, then we can deal with the sane business people
i also think obama is entitled to savor, just for one day, his administration's succss in this operation

So let's make greed illegal, and pot legal. That way everybody gets what they want.
I really don't understand why restoring people's personal rights should depend on apprehending mass murderers that were created by that prohibition.
Besides an emotional appeal to punish the most obviously violent criminals, while ignoring the causes of crime, your argument does not persuade me.
Personally, I'd rather smoke a joint than go to jail. You find something wrong with that. I don't think you get it.

He was speaking at U of Maryland.
The question was roughly, "When will we end the wasteful and failed drug war?"
He said things that could be summed up as a "redoubling our efforts" on interdiction, education, reducing demand, etc.
He paused.
And then he made a short declarative statement that had "not" and "decriminalizing" together.
It should be up on C-SPAN soon.
