A simple winning campaign platform: Save SS & Medicare |
|
Obama has seriously misjudged if he thinks his strategy of appealing to the mushy middle by appearing to be a deficit hawk is a winner.
Majorities left, right, and center want SS & Medicare protected and strengthened. The public is ready for a party that pushes to expand these programs and pay for them by taxing fairly. Nearly all the growth in the nation's wealth this past quarter century went to the top 1% so it's only fair for them to start paying their share.

3. I think he is a deficit hawk. |

Maybe he wasn't always, but surrounded as he is by so many Third Way/DlC/New Democrats or whatever new label they are applying to themselves these days, and with NO progressive, sane, normal economists to counter them, he apparently is now a deficit hawk.
But yes, if he ignored them all and came out swinging in favor of protecting rather than bargaining with, social safety nets, he would have the support of a majority of Americans.
He has gone into a bubble in DC where the minority reside and are completely out of touch with normal people.

4. "Majorities left, right, and center want SS & Medicare protected and strengthened." |
|
That is true; however, they do not all agree how it should be done.
Therein lies the difficulty of politically framing the issue.
