House panel approves bill forcing ISPs to log users’ web history

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/07/28/house-panel-approves-bill-forcing-isps-to-log-users-web-history/

I'm going to tell them that if this bill is signed into law, then I'm going to cancel my service contract with them.

And I'm completely serious. Fuck them, I'll go back to letter writing.

If our government wants to put the needs of corporations ahead of the needs of the people, let them. But corporations won't get my support and government won't get my cooperation while they do it.

2. I'm onboard.
What bothers me the most is that so few people seem care that they've already been stripped of their privacy both in the private and public arenas. This just adds insult to injury.

3. It is becoming increasingly difficult to function in this country without using the internet
and that is especially true if you are a working professional.

11. threatening doesn't mean you have to foIlow through
Just let them know you are unhappy. They are the ones making money, and the ones with the government's ear.

I can still access it through the library or a job, but I guess I'm lucky enough not to need it.

4. This is less about corporations and
more about the Repukes need to know everything we do, so they can stop gay people and all other forms of "evil".

12. So... hit them where it hurts. Make their base (corporations) cry a little
that will get the Repugs attention.

6. You would be better off writing your Senator or the President,
Your ISP has no control over national policy.

14. So you are telling me (with a straight face) that corporations have no control over national policy?
Do we live in the same country?

17. I'm not telling you that at all,
But I don't know about you, but I know that my ISP, and others, really don't want to do this. It is going to take money on their part, you know, bottom line stuff. It is going to hit small providers really hard.

7. I already ranted about this extension of the "Patriot" Act here but need to correct you
The point of the bill is child porn.

"Needs of the corporations" is the ugly (and likely inevitable) side effect.

13. Nope. It won't affect public wifi (like starbucks), so child porn will still be passed around
just through open servers.

21. I understand that. That isn't the point of the bill.
By all means, go on a rant all you like, but don't be surprised if whatever responses you get are all "um wut?"

22. Porn will still be passed around. But you are saying that isn't the point of the bill... I confused
Splain it to me.

If the point of the bill to stop child porn isn't to stop child porn what is the point?

The general consensus (on tech sites) is that it isn't about child porn, it's about snooping on EVERYBODY with a "But What About the CHILDREN???" cover story

So what do you think it's about?

23. Not that I disagree with their assessment (as I have stated)
Edited on Fri Jul-29-11 10:41 PM by Ruby the Liberal
but to my original point, if you are going to write them, be aware of the intent of the bill.

Frame your concerns appropriately so that you aren't set up as someone defending kiddie porn. Thats all I was saying...

16. TOTALLY technologically
challenged. How would I contact MY ISP with the same message. I am infuriated, though "the powers that be" do NOT give a damn! To catch pedophiles...yeah, right!

NOT that that is not a good goal; however, this is NOT about that, this is about one more chink in our privacy!

18. Go to their website (or write them an old fashioned letter to snail mail) and
find the contact button... that will usually give you email. Or you can google the name of your ISP's website and the word contact. That will usually get you to the right page.

24. From my ISP
"TalkingDog"

Thanks for sending over this information. There have been rumblings like this for years and generally it is not feasible for most ISP's to keep such records.

We are a member of WISPA and FISPA which represents companies like ours in Washington and actively works with the FCC on our behalf.

Again thanks for expressing your opinion on this matter.

So, call or email them. They need to be able to saytell the Republicans in Washington: People are threatening to end their service.
