Poll question: Ok we need a term that speaks to the willful ignorance
mostly seen these days in the extreme right wing of the Republican party. I know I use a term that some people find offensive, so I shan't in the poll. Suffice it to say, I use it in this way... noun: Somebody who is willfully ignorant and proud of it.

You can find the discussion on terms here.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=1609967&mesg_id=1609967

So what follows are some terms that will help all of us to identify this state of mind.

On a personal note, I am no longer a poll virgin...

:-)

9. It Isn't Willful Ignorance At All
"Willful ignorance" did not cause Eric Cantor to buy into the Proshares Ultrashort ETF fund,
and to subsequently do everything in his power to force the country to default.

The bears are gonna make a killing. :grr:

14. The word "avidya" from Hindu says it...
Edited on Sat Jul-30-11 12:02 PM by SpiralHawk
It describes a deliberate retreat from the truth -- a not wanting to know. Deliberate ignorance. Unwisdom.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avidy%C4%81

"The work of avidya is to suppress the real nature of things and present something else in its place...This is responsible for all the misery of humanity..."

16. I heard a term for the form of government they want this morning on NPR: Loonocracy
This was on 'Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!' The opening announcer was naming the kinds of government. Democracy, Plutocracy, Theocracy etc...

He joked that the current situation was looking like a 'Loonocracy.'

17. Certainly there's some overlap of worldview in the various poll choices but
Iddiocrat fits the best. Thoroughly dumbed down and fixated on small potatoes. I say that because of your reference to 'Idiocracy'. I agree with you that while it may be pigeon-holed as a comedy, to me it is a humorous documentary. As you say, one has to see the movie to apppreciate how true it all is. ( and how scary the future will look )

22. I like Idiocrat, as well.
However, I think it could be taken as an insult and harden them. How about Ideocrat?

Other thoughts: These idiots are full of spite, so I wouldn't put it past them to push forward felons ...

The Bachmanns can pray the gay away all they want, and the ideocrats WILL NOT CARE. They have used FHA loans (while bashing the whole industry), and the ideocrats WILL NOT CARE. *So what?*

Joe Walsh's lawyer said of him (paraphrased): He's just like any OTHER dead-beat dad! In translation: *So what?*

Coburn facilitated Ensign's payoff to his lover and her husband. *So what?*

26. Nadin, to me, this all factors in to propaganda that the Repubs..
began years ago.. I still have bookmarked Newt Gingrich's 1996 "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control"

It has to do more with hijacking people's belief systems and linking that to political thought.

31. Absolutely... you are very correct
and this is why FRAMES matter, but our side has not learned that.

This said, this is beyond that... it is about a state of mind and it is not party specific, even if right now it seems that way.

29. Let's make it eponymous.
Seeing as how the guy worked so hard to propel the downward slide of public education - "Reaganites." We are, in painful measure, reaping what he sowed.

Reaganites/reaganists, reaganism, reaganistic . . .
