I just want to take a moment to apologize about a thread I started |
|
I started a thread , which I later asked to be locked, with a poll question. The question I wrote was :
<<Poll question: Grover Norquist would replace income tax with property tax because it's "fair">>
and went on to ask "Wouldn't a national property tax be more fair? Those who own the biggest chunks of America pay the most to keep and defend it."
I screwed up. The original question had been intended to read:
<<Poll question: Grover Norquist would replace income tax with SALES tax because it's "fair">>
and would have gone on to ask "Wouldn't a national property tax be more fair? Those who own the biggest chunks of America pay the most to keep and defend it."
So, I find myself, on DU of all places, apologizing for misrepresenting Grover Norquist's views. The error was completely unintentional.

4. Wouldn't a national sales tax discourage spending? |
|
I mean, repugs use that argument all the time to defend calls for lower taxes for the rich.

If it replaced other taxes, maybe, maybe not. If it were imposed on top of existing taxes, it probably would discourage spending.

7. That argument works on a state to state basis. |
|
I mean, people who live in California just shy of the Oregon border do go north a few miles to escape the onerous 7% sales tax here.
But if the sales tax was nationwide, I would think the argument would be nul and void.
Most people are not going to hop on a plane to Mexico just to buy some fancy pants bikes for the kids. They will still see things at the mall that they have to have, etc.
And yes, some of the privileged will do it. But many of those people only live in the USA a few months out of the year. I mean, the beaches in Thailand are just so gorgeous in the winter, Australia's coral reef has great diving, then there is Cannes France and its film festival in the summer, and on and on.
We aren't capturing the spending dollars of the Ultra Rich anyway.
