Today the best friend I have ever had passed away. |
|
Nell was a St. Bernard/Lab mix we adopted over 14 yrs ago from PetSmarts rescue shelter days. She was the kindest most loving soul I've ever encountered. All she ever wanted from me was my attention and when my life was "too important" to spend quality time with her she never held it against me - she'd just rejoiced when I came to my senses. She was mine and wife Libbie's first kid. She once ate our couch. She loved to run and fetch anything she could carry. She was always very gentle and loving with us and the kids, but would kill an intruder. SHE LOVED TO SWIM!! I always felt loved when I was near her. My only wish is that she knew I much I loved her...

I'm sure she knew how much you loved her, animals have an instinct for knowing things like that. I lost my dog just before Christmas that I had for 16 years. Even after all these months just thinking about him brings me to tears. Animals make an imprint on your heart that never goes away.

...she only lived with us two years, and in that second year, couldn't walk.
Loud, obstreperous, sweet and loving -- and this was perhaps the only home she had where she was loved in return.
I bet your friend knew exactly how much you loved her. Take care...

I lost a dear cat 11 months ago. He was my best friend through some of the darkest days of my life. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING in my adult life was worse.
Our furry friends give the purest and most unconditional love that can be. They are always there, and understand when we are hurting. To lose that love is an awful thing.

after eighteen years. He was our best buddy. He was a rescue too, from the SPCA in California.
The house seems lonely without them, doesn't it?
I believe your dog knew abd trusted in how much she was loved, and she had a wonderful, loving home. I think you gave her a beautiful gift in a world that is not always kind to animals, especially animals in need of rescue. Be proud of the happy home and life full of love you gave you doggy friend.

11 year old Weim in January and our 10 year old lab mix 2 years before that. After a few months we were lonely for another dog. We live in upstate NY and decided to honor our girls by adopting 2 dogs from high kill shelters in the south. We now have 2 beautiful young girls that have a chance at life (rather than being gassed, that we love dearly. They are so grateful and happy. I hope you realize that your friend loved you as much as you obviously love her.

Very sorry for your doggy loss. I lost my girl on New Years Eve last year.
It was very tough--she had been with me through some real hard times and losing her tore into me deep. I hope you heal quickly. My partner got me a puppy six months later and I was against it but it was a wonderful choice. You still miss your old dog just as much but while you miss her you get to balance that out with puppy love. It helped me heal in retrospect. Don't just be sad when you can be sad and happy at the same time.

74. A cross-species bonding like you & Nell shared is very powerful; and it hurts like hell to lose it. |
|
We almost always outlive the wonderful creatures that trust us and love us unconditionally. You gave Nell 14+ years of love, shelter and security -- have no doubts as to her knowing how much you loved her. I absolutely guarantee you, she knew!
I know how desperately empty the void is when a beloved pet leaves us; the heartache can be almost unbearable. If possible, remove/hide any visual triggers: brushes, toys, etc. -- just a small help for these toughest days. It will get better, but like so many things, it takes time.

I have no doubt that Nell knew every bit of how much you loved her. Dogs have a way of just knowing these things. It's got to be terribly painful right now but, hopefully, you'll be able to remember the good times with her and derive comfort.
