Sarah Palin on 'Crosshairs' Controversy: 'I Hate Violence'
I'm confused. If you like shooting animals just to shoot them, doesn't that show a love of violence?

Sarah Palin on 'Crosshairs' Controversy: 'I Hate Violence'
Sarah Palin E-Mails Glenn Beck on Ad That Put 'Crosshairs' on Gabrielle Giffords' District

PrintRSSFont Size: Share:EmailTwitterFacebookMoreFarkTechnoratiGoogleLiveMy SpaceNewsvineRedditDeliciousMixxYahoo"I hate violence." Those are the latest words from Sarah Palin on the tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 19 others that has once again placed the former Alaska Governor in the middle of the national political discussion.

The words were part of an e-mail exchange read by conservative commentator Glenn Beck on his syndicated radio show and first reported by Jonathan Martin on Politico.

Here is the full e-mail as read by Beck:

"I hate violence. I hate war. Our children will not have peace if politicos just capitalize on this to succeed in portraying anyone as inciting terror and violence. Thanks for all you do to send the message of truth and love. And God has the answer. - Sarah"

1. Sure she does. As Andrew Sullivan just pointed out...
One of the constants in Sarah Palin's worldview is violence. You see it in her reality show where most wildlife is immediately identified as a threat to be guarded against or killed. You see it in her inflammatory language, and the ways in which she corrals supporters to sometimes shockingly violent threats. You see it even in completely innocuous Facebook postings on sports. Just check out this Palin stream-of-consciousness on, yes, March Madness:
To the teams that desire making it this far next year: Gear up! In the battle, set your sights on next season's targets! From the shot across the bow – the first second's tip-off – your leaders will be in the enemy's crosshairs, so you must execute strong defensive tactics. You won't win only playing defense, so get on offense!

The crossfire is intense, so penetrate through enemy territory by bombing through the press, and use your strong weapons – your Big Guns – to drive to the hole. Shoot with accuracy; aim high and remember it takes blood, sweat and tears to win. Focus on the goal and fight for it.

If the gate is closed, go over the fence. If the fence is too high, pole vault in. If that doesn't work, parachute in. If the other side tries to push back, your attitude should be "go for it." Get in their faces and argue with them. (Sound familiar?!) Every possession is a battle; you'll only win the war if you've picked your battles wisely. No matter how tough it gets, never retreat, instead RELOAD!

but many people hunt for food.

I live in a poor rural area of North Florida where deer and hog hunting is common. It's not unusual to have deer run out in front of your car while driving and you definitely don't want to hit one. Without the hunting season the deer population would soar and eventually deer would starve or become diseased. The wild hog population is also out of control and they do a lot of damage to the environment. You can hunt wild hog year around without a license.

The population of feral hogs is second only to Texas. Every year hunters harvest about 100,000 hogs and their population numbers are still on the rise.

Florida has no closed season on hog hunting. You can hunt hogs all year long. As long as you have the land owner's permission you're okay. There is no hunting license required to hunt hogs in Florida either. In addition there are no size or bag limits on feral hogs in Florida.

You can also hunt hogs at night in Florida using hog lights. And you can trap hogs too. You can either buy a hog trap or build your own.

http://www.hog-hunting-guide.com/florida-hog-hunting.html

Prepared properly venison or wild hog is IMO superior to store bought meat. It definitely helps the people in the area who live on a tight income provide for their family.

I personally don't hunt as I have hip and back problems, but my daughter has several friends who do and they often give my daughter some game. My daughter plans to take up hunting in the near future especially with the way store bought meat is climbing in price.

28. That might be true today ...
but she didn't start out wealthy. I believe her dad did hunt for food. Also it's quite possible that beef and chicken prices are much higher in Alaska than in the contiguous 48. Many items are.

42. Personally I don't believe she's very aquainted with hunting. IMO she shot that animal for show.
Now her dad may hunt, and she may have a couple of times, but watching her on her show she seemed to be VERY unfamiliar with the process. The men along with her told her what to do, how to aim, and she did seem nervous.

She was very unlike a woman who lives up there and does hunt. They would have just gone in and done it. It was a big ordeal for Palin. She was very unsure and tentative after she shot the animal and while approaching.

You can't convince me she's a hunter. Uh uh.

34. Also in Sandpoint, where her dad is from, most of
the locals go out every year to get their deer or elk for the year. However, they do have supermarkets and many of the local ranchers raise beef, so you really don't have to hunt unless you want some venison in your freezer.

38. That's interesting, thanks ...
I was trying to research the availability and price of beef in the local markets. Obviously some areas of Alaska are so remote that hunting is probably the only choice.

I have met many people that prefer venison and other game to store bought beef. In my opinion it tastes as good or better, much depends on the preparation.

45. A good part of my family back in the midwest hunts -
they do it for sport, and eat the result. They wouldn't have to - they can afford meat - but they enjoy it. I don't love that, but given the realities of farm-fed animals often treated inhumanely, who is to say it is not more humane to hunt. They are also honest about what they are doing.

My problem with Sarah is that I don't buy her act. I think she is in this for the money, and left her job in Alaska because she decided she could make more money on TV and books. She saw her 15 minutes of fame and went for it. Hopefully, now, we are reaching the end of this chapter.

23. Yes, "hunting" is violent.
I don't care how the folks that do it spin it, but it is indeed violent. Matter of fact, I'd rate it up there amongst the highest acts of violence, shooting an unarmed, unsuspecting being for (a good percentage of, but certainly not all) selfish reasons.

Flame away, gunslingers!

30. You would hate living where I live ...
Just about everybody, men, women and teenagers hunt deer. When I first moved here, I remember a grandmother in he 70s bragging at the hardware store about how she shot her first deer of the season using her new black powder rifle. At a Christmas party last year I met a tiny little 14 or 15 year old girl who had just got her first deer. She was proud to say the least.

Without hunting the deer population would soar and eventually the deer would die of starvation or disease.

33. I've lived up north in the forest and yes, it's part of the
culture, but the locals do it for food and to cull the deer population. They don't shoot just any animal willy nilly either. Usually, it was a buck over three years old or a doe that wasn't raising young ones. I really hated the hunters though that came in from other places to do it for fun, the Sarah Palins, when I was a campground host. The locals didn't like them either because of the way they hunted and because they often had a terrible aim leaving a wounded animal to run and bleed to death.

I never understood bear hunting. Why? And the way it's done is downright cruel.

37. I believe that very few hunters come into our county from outside the area ...
and very few people, if any, are hunting only for trophies. People hunt for food and while I myself am not a hunter as I have back and hip problems that would make hunting difficult, I enjoy the taste of venison or wild hog. In fact I feel it tastes as good as or in many cases better than meat bought in a store.
