1000s lining up to have their emails snail mailed to people.
'Snail Mail' project promotes art of letters

(CNN) -- Call it technology in reverse: Thousands of people are lining up online to have messages they could send in an instant delivered far more slowly.

And according to the creator of Snail Mail My Email, a monthlong volunteer project, that's the point.

"We move in such a fast-paced world that, sometimes, that world can feel kind of cold and impersonal," said Ivan Cash, a San Francisco designer and art director who birthed the project. "I'm very much a part of that fast-paced world ... but I think it's good for people to have that balance."

The concept is simple. Since July 15 (and until August 15), anyone interested has been able to e-mail a letter to the project's volunteers. They turn around and hand-write the letter -- complete with extras like a doodle, flower petal or lipstick kiss if desired -- and mail it to the recipient.

2. I've written and mailed 6 letters in the past month to grandkids
away at camp (no electronics allowed),and they have done the same to me.

What a treat.

3. That's such a great idea! I remember getting letters from an aunt
when I was a kid, back in the 50s. It was such a special treat to have something in the mail addressed to me at that age. I do it from time to time to my great-nieces and nephews, just for grins. They always write back, and are always glad to see me at family gatherings. I used to send them to their parents, too.

It's such an easy thing to do, and so rewarding for the kids.

5. It was actually quite ritualistic for me. I used Edward Hopper note paper that I
purchased when I saw his exhibit, return address labels with puppies and kittens that I received from The Animal Rescue League, and my Mark Twain postage stamps.

Fun stuff.

4. Last year I composed and mailed a letter of encouragement and support to
one of my long-ago vet school professors who was badly injured in an accident. It was on PAPER, my letterhead, because I wanted him to be able to hold it in his hands and read it again and again. I know from personal experience that this is far more meaningful than electronic communications.

I just wish I had a paper copy of the phone call I got from him in return.
