2. The better question is what is the real number.
Real number is probably 15%, reported will be > 9 < 10, like you stated.

7. I think the reported number overstates the real number.
There are a good many baby boomers who have no intention ore re-entering the work force but are collecting unemployment while they wait to file for their Social Security. I am 60. My spouse is 65. We were talking about this earlier this morning and without much effort each of us listed at least 15 associates who volunteered for layoff in the last 12 months who have no intention of returning to work.

10. An uptick at this time of year would not be abnormal
Seasonal employment will start to wind down as fall approaches and school restarts.

I'll be interested to see back-to-school spending figures. I'll also be interested to see car sales figures as the 2012s start to roll out in earnest, and as Japan ramps up production.

15. Not good. My wife works in a dental office and....
she has been coming home early for the past few weeks. Never happened before but the number of patients has dropped. Then the guy across the street who worked at a large machine shop said he was layed off. That place has been busy as long as I can remember. Not anymore.
I am convinced it is going to get a lot worse.

16. Real unemployment has been over 16 percent, as per many sources.
Do a quick google search of the major news and financial reports. It may even be higher at this point.
