Jeremy Scahill: Bush administration authorized ‘sick torture tactics’

Jeremy Scahill, national security reporter for The Nation, appeared on Current TV’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann Thursday night to discuss the latest revelations about waterboarding and other “water treatment” torture practices used by the Department of Defense.

“What we are learning is more sick details of torture tactics that most certainly were authorized and advocated at the highest levels of the Bush administration,” he said.

Scahill also noted that Obama has an “extremely poor record” of holding U.S. agents accountable for alleged acts of torture.

One ray of hope is the lawsuit being allowed against Rumsfeld. But it is shameful that the victims of torture who have tried to sue in this country have been turned down every time. But maybe one day it will happen. It took decades in other countries, but justice is something people yearn for and they don't give up.

Too bad we have no one in authority here interested in seeing this terrible stain on this country dealt with.

Kudos to Jeremy Scahill for not forgetting those terrible crimes against humanity.

Edited to correct title.

I was going to call and ask them to include it and then I realized we already had it!

Keith is great and now he doesn't have to worry about the Corporate media. :-)

9. This sort of conspiracy reporting

only serves to distract the CIA from keeping the country safe.

I can't wait to get the real story about the enhanced interrogation program:

11. We still don't know WTF happened in regard
to "high value" detainees.

CIA agent John Kiriakou contradicted himself in regard to the effectiveness of torture on Zubaydah. In his book he claimed that torture worked only to note in book tour interviews that his claim might be completely untrue.

A NY Times article on KSM by Scott Shane noted that a CIA agent named Deuce Martinez interrogated KSM. Martinez had no counterterrorism background, spoke no Arabic and had no interrogation experience. Yet he took part in an "ad-hoc" effort to attain crucial intelligence. Are you kidding me?

The whole thing is secret which enables the proponents to make any BS claims they want. The media assumes good faith from the start because they don't believe in real journalism. Thus we get the overreaction theory or the "how fucking dare you question your government" defense.

12. Friendly noise, you'll just have to wait, and wait, and wait.
I think the CIA broke the law and destroyed the evidence. But we'll have to wait for an un-corrupt justice department and congress and courts and media to be sure.

You would think the despicable crime of torture would turn the tide for openness and justice, somehow?

13. You did not give credit to original story
Jeremy Scahill was on Olbermann to comment on a segment on water torture that specifically referenced the article I wrote at Truthout two days before the Scahill interview. It was the product of a good deal of research, and if readers are actually interested in knowing how DoD hid and practiced/developed their own version of water torture or simulated/partial drowning of prisoners as a torture technique, then they should read my article.

14. Waterboarding is a good way
to get somebody to confess to witchcraft.

It is an ineffective way to obtain accurate intelligence.

16. I remember when the Abu Ghraib pictures came out and
Rumsfeld was questioned about it on the press. He wept crocodile tears and stated that he felt terrible about what was happening to the prisoners and they were going to get to the bottom of it. Turns out he was on top of not only that torture place but all of them and very hands on it with it. He really needs to be investigated by the Dept. of Justice. Why isn't it happening?

17. Does anyone else think...
perhaps tapes of torture were made to be fapping material
for Cheney or some unknown individuals.
They did this despite knowing it is less likely
to produce good intelligence than plain vanilla
interrogation. They did it knowing it defies the
constitution, Geneva convention, and the
Uniform Code of Military Justice.
So.....why?
Only 2 reasons i can think of:
1. Totalitarianish intimidation of the general
population.
2. Whacking material.

Now, it is a lot of trouble to go through to make
whacking material. Plenty of (simulated) torture
porn is available out there for the taking.
However, let's remember who we're talking about.
These sickos probably need REAL torture to get off, and even if not,
well these people were known to defy all logic.
