Disapproval Rate for Congress at Record 82% After Debt Talks
Disapproval Rate for Congress at Record 82% After Debt Talks
By MICHAEL COOPER and MEGAN THEE-BRENAN

The debate over raising the debt ceiling, which brought the nation to the brink of default, has sent disapproval of Congress to its highest level on record and left most Americans saying that creating jobs should now take priority over cutting spending, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

A record 82 percent of Americans now disapprove of the way Congress is handling its job — the most since The Times first began asking the question in 1977, and even more than after another political stalemate led to a shutdown of the federal government in 1995.

More than four out of five people surveyed said that the recent debt-ceiling debate was more about gaining political advantage than about doing what is best for the country. Nearly three-quarters said that the debate had harmed the image of the United States in the world.

Republicans in Congress shoulder more of the blame for the difficulties in reaching a debt-ceiling agreement than President Obama and the Democrats, the poll found.

1. And the former Democratic Party will not pin anything on the crooks who caused this mess
I'm fed the *uck up with DINOs as much as Repukes

Damage done, it's over. When you see some talking head claiming it's not - they are the enemy. They are propagandizing you.

2. Why is the approval rating so high?
Are 18% of the people in this country asleep?

5. The unfortunate thing is, the typical attitude toward Congress is something like this:
"Throw ALL the bums out! Except for mine, of course, he's not a bum because he gets federal money spent in my district."

6. Want to se the whole survey?
Here it is http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/08/05/us/politics/20110805_Poll-docs.html?ref=politics and realtively speaking it is not too bad. A few examples:

- approve disapprove Obama 47/48
- approve/disapprove how obama handled the debt negotiation 46/47
- approve/disapprove Boehner 30/57
- approve/disapprove how they handled deby ceiling Rs 21/72 Ds 28/66
- who do you trust to make right decisions on economy Rs in congress 33 Obama 47, etc.

Overall it is mostly "a pox on both their houses" and people are frustrated and angry (surprise!) but it's mostly against the Rs
