Sunland Park mayor testifies he was drunk when signing documents which he contends made them invalid
LAS CRUCES - Sunland Park Mayor Martin Resendiz admitted to being drunk while signing some $1 million in contracts with an architectural firm, according to a deposition transcript.

The admission was made during a lawsuit the company later filed, claiming it was defrauded out of the money.

"The day I signed. I had way too much to drink. It was after 5 p.m. and I signed it (the contracts) and I didn't know what I was signing. My sister had to pick me up," Resendiz wrote in response to questions from lawyers for the architectural design firm, Synthesis+, according to The Associated Press.

Papers signed

According to a transcript of Resendiz's June 2010 deposition by El Paso attorney Victor Poulos, Resendiz acknowledged signing the documents in May or June 2008 after several hours of drinking with Sythesis+ executives at Ardovino's Crossing, an Italian restaurant in Sunland Park. Among the executives present was architect Daniel Soltero.

2. It's called SWI (Signing While Intoxicated)

the fine print tends to get really blurry after three hours of non-stop boozing.

Resendiz, a Democrat, has announced that he will challenge Teabagger U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce (R) for the U.S. House seat next year in NM Dist. 2 (the southern half of the state).

Coming clean on SWI now may help him. Or sink him.

I think the latter, because NM Dist. 2 is infested with Repugs, unlike northern NM where Demos rule.

3. Hey, all you entrepreneurs! A new industry is born!
"Pre-contractual drug testing!"

You have your testing equipment; you go out to corporate offices where contracts are about to be signed; and you have each signer provide a urine sample for you to test before they sign the contracts.

You can have some spiffy name for you company, like "Urine Charge!" or "Pee and Pen."

Man, you'd be busy!

6. Doesn't it take more than one city official signature on a contract?
I know our city requires 2 signatures on checks, why not contracts. Two heads are better than one. One might be sober.
