All pop culture aside, when this book was written and took place (1980s) Thatcherism was in full swing. Programs were being cut right and left. Manufacturing had left, or was leaving the UK. Unions had been effectively neutered. For the youth of Scotland, Heroin was the only alternative.

So...is this where we're headed?

There are some very rich people there, but about half the population lives in poverty.

Drugs are an alternative, and with them come the drug gangs: La Familia, Los Zetas, the Gulf Cartel, and so on. Societal destruction, through economic violence from the top, unleashes society destroying violence from the bottom.
