Read the police magazines online. See how they compare themselves to a military taking on enemy forces (they describe society as a whole as being a potential threat).
They are not a friend on freedom.

4. From this report, a good thing, and long overdue...
You may recall that during Katrina's aftermath New Orleans Police Chief Compass issued a fiat for all civilians to surrender their guns (which presumably included the deceased citizens), and used various LEOs in and out of Louisiana to effect confiscation. In this manner, "duly authorized" LEOs could go about business as usual.

The fiat was wholly unlawful, and had no Constitutional basis. Just goes to show what some elected officials will try, Constitution be damned.
