Simpson: Guys trying to ‘hammer’ Obama ‘ought to give it up.’

President Barack Obama would have been “savaged” and “torn to bits” by Democrats had he embraced the Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction plan when it was released late last year, former Wyoming Republican Sen. Alan Simpson said this week.

*****“This guy (Obama) is a little bit smarter than some of the guys who are trying to hammer him. They ought to give it up,” Simpson said.

The full text of my interview with Simpson will appear online this Sunday, but here’s a taste of some of our 30-minute conversation:

3. "We were kind of thrilled that we’ve irritated so many people. "
Simpson and Bowles....the really cute couple. Does Simpson realize what he just said?

"So Obama waits, and then he punched Ryan out pretty well — I thought rather harshly and Erskine and I told him that — but, look what the President got away with. That speech at George Washington University, he stood up and said, ‘I’m for a $4 trillion cut over 12 years. And Bowles and Simpson were $4 trillion over 10.’ And as this thing played out and they were talking about $2.3 trillion and then $2.1 trillion and you’re at $900 billion now.

The President has got himself in a position where he says, ‘Look, I was bold enough to throw that out.’ And if he’d thrown that out a year ago, his base would’ve ripped him to shreds. And he tosses it out at GW and there’s not a peep out of his base."

Only 900 billion on the backs of the elderly and poor and needy...mostly.

6. Well our other new bff Grover Norquist LIKED the deal
so maybe we could put both Simpson and Norquist in a small rubber room and let them settle their billionaires club beef all by themselves.
