31 US Troops Killed in helicopter crash in Afghanistan
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44043847/ns/world_news-south_and_central_asia/

Thirty-one U.S. troops and 7 Afghan soldiers were killed when a NATO helicopter crashed in Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai said Saturday.

It was the highest number of casualties recorded in a single incident in Afghanistan.

Karzai said in a statement on Saturday that he has sent condolences to President Barack Obama for the victims of the overnight crash.

He said the dead American soldiers were members of the special forces.

A military official told The New York Times that the Chinook helicopter had been shot down by insurgents. The paper said the official spoke on condition of anonymity because the crash was still being investigated.

If confirmed, it would be one of the worst losses of life for coalition forces since the war began.

Jesus...:(

3. How unspeakably tragic.
Someone remind me why we're still there. When the Russians were there, we boycotted the Moscow Olympics and talked about how foolish and futile their efforts were. :(

10. Where did they get the rocket?
If this was not an incredibly lucky shot with an rpg, then the taliban has gained access to more sophisticated weapons and that could seriously complicate our efforts there, as it did for the Russians in the 80s.

It would also be interesting to know who is supplying them.

Fat fucking chance that will ever happen. They never met a war they did not like. My major problem with Obama is not ending these wars.

23. But, but, but . . . we have to stay in Afghanistan or those who have
already died will have died in vain :sarcasm:

Just read your history of the Vietnam War and you'll see every excuse we used to justify our occupation there trotted out almost verbatim to justify our continuing occupation in the AfPak and Iraq theaters.

pray tell, were Navy SEALs doing there in the first fucking place? Paging Admiral Mullen. Earth to Admiral Mullen.
