Body of diver missing for 17 years found in Lake Tahoe
The body of a diver who disappeared 17 years ago in Lake Tahoe's deep, frigid waters has been found, El Dorado County authorities confirmed Monday.

The well-preserved body of Donald Christopher Windecker was discovered July 23 on an underwater shelf, 265 feet below the surface. A remote-controlled mini-submarine equipped with a robotic claw raised the remains on July 27. The recovery occurred on the lake's west side, near Rubicon Point.

Mixed-gas scuba divers, who can safely descend to about 350 feet, were exploring cliff walls when they were startled to see Windecker's motionless form, El Dorado County sheriff's Sgt. Jim Byers said.

Mixed-gas scuba divers can descend much deeper than conventional scuba divers without suffering nitrogen narcosis and other problems. Conventional scuba divers have to stop at about 100 feet.

4. Crazy man...I remember the original story
Been here since 1992, and recall this story in the paper. Knowing it happened off Rubicon Pt. many of us speculated he'd never be found... that is the largest and deepest drop off point in the lake (yes, it's freaking deep!)...the freshwater and the temperatures preserve incredibly...

Jaques cousteau wanted to submerge to the bottom of the lake and look around back in the 80s, and the casinos were the ones who put a stop to it...lots of locals comment that it's because they have a LOT of former gamers down there with 'cement shoes'

narly.

6. Wonder if they'll find more bodies now
Very interesting. If I remember, Tahoe is one of the deepest freshwater lakes.

9. yes...
Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in the world and the second deepest, only next to Crater Lake in Or.

when that fault finally goes someday, there's gonna be a LOT of water coming down!

11. Just Wondering
I also read the dead guys friend who was with him up and married his widow just months after he "died". Something smells fishy and it ain't the dead guy's body.
