Very compelling coverage. Talking to people who have been swept up in the chaos. Sounds like a war zone and its spreading. On any other day, this would be dominating the news here.

Bristol, Birmingham, Croydon, Clapham, Enfield, Liverpool, Lewisham, Peckham... the list goes on.

13. I don't get what you are trying to say.
Are you trying to say that the young people are rioting because of the stock market? Really?

14. Poster asked if our news was covering the British riots and we're not, for the most part.
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 03:30 AM by joshcryer
We probably would but the stocks are a bigger talking point, poor people rioting, not so much.

2. I have to ask...
I only saw a brief mention of there being a police officer and a student issue that sparked this whole thing? what was it?

...and wow, if the (so very proper) British are going bonkers, then the rest of the civilized world must be going down soon! :scared:

3. second paragraph here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/08/context-london-riots

"The policies of the past year may have clarified the division between the entitled and the dispossessed in extreme terms, but the context for social unrest cuts much deeper. The fatal shooting of Mark Duggan last Thursday, where it appears, contrary to initial accounts, that only police bullets were fired, is another tragic event in a longer history of the Metropolitan police's treatment of ordinary Londoners, especially those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and the singling out of specific areas and individuals for monitoring, stop and search and daily harassment."

More links there as well.

5. i get it
went to read the main BBC page and found some background.

what's their unemployment rate for young people? My guess is pretty high. Isn;t it just basic sociology that when you have a large disenfranchised group, especially youth, then it is a recipe for stuff like this.

and i wonder what it will finally take to push our country into chaos? or are we just doped up and numb?

8. Good questions
but I really think it would take near disaster - sad to say. Some of this is just based on my own observations from the people around me. They either don't pay attention or don't want to know (ignorance is bliss).

I don't know their unemployment rate for youth but if their general unemployment rate is something like 8.2%, I would imagine it is pretty high for young folks.

11. We are not Briton.
Ours is a much larger country with much space between us. That's not to say that a riot could not break out. Only that because we have such a large space between us,... well, it would be different. Besides, we have our own type of riots! We don't need to be influenced by Brittish punks! We have our own NYC punks!

and they are all but fun...

I avoid coverage of them for very personal reasons.
