So is it time to go to Costco and stock up on some staples...
I mean, get a bunch of canned goods, some bags of rice...

I don't know, this is starting to scare me...

But then again, my drugs will run out and I'll probably be dead within a couple of months if things go south...

16. There is a difference between doom and gloom and REALITY
Grocery prices will continue to rise.
Your current dollar will buy even less-
Buy non perishables with shelf life at THIS price- not the coming ones.

Your instincts are good and the numbers are factual- not
doom and gloom.

20. My Grandmother lived through the Great Depression
and as a result, always kept her pantry stocked to the max. She never got over how hard it was to put food on the table back then. It made her feel safer to have a supply of food that she bought while on sale.

And trust me- food is at "sale price" right now compared to what is coming.

26. Mine too- I still have a great aunt in Kentucky who still lives that way-
Open the pantry under her stairway in her farmhouse
and there is a years supply of home canned goods.

Which is what I wish I had right now.

2. You should always have some sort of emergency provisions anyway, just in case. You
never know when a bad storm or an asteroid strike might come along and mess your world up.

5. I remember back in the late '80s...
My husband called me at work to let me know that the stock market lost almost half its worth. One big plunging day. We had just started putting money into my 457 plan at work. Eventually, the market recuperated and I was even able to take an early retirement in '99.

I don't know what's going to happen now. But all I can say is that I've been here before in a way. Every so many years the big money dopes have to steal what we have.

So stock up if it makes you feel good. And for both our sakes I pray that they keep our meds flowing. That would be a really bad move on their part if they create a med shortage. Stinking fly covered carcasses in the streets would be hard to escape. Those same big money boys would have to retreat to their private, floating residences and hope like hell that the hired help doesn't turn on them.

All the best tuna casserole recipes to you,
Debbie Downer :-/

But that was to be ready for hurricane season more than anything else.

9. That doesn't make any sense.
If you're worried about some sort of societal collapse you can't count on the power staying on to cook the rice. If you're worried about winter weather, you can't count on the power staying on either. Having a full pantry is never a bad idea (if nothing else it helps if your finances are a bit thin for a while) but if you're trying to plan for an emergency you should probably focus on things that are edible and stable at room temperature.

15. Actually it makes perfect sense.
ANYTHING with a shelf life should be bought and stocked up on
at CURRENT prices.
Commodities are going to go through the ceiling and
in case you haven't noticed, groceries are pretty damned high priced at the moment-
News flash- they are going to go higher.

Why pay twice as much for rice, coffee, beans, canned goods etc...
in a month or less?

As for cooking it, some of us have stocked up on propane and water.

I have pre-ordered my family prescriptions and plan on
stocking up on the pet food as well.

BTW- did you check the P.O.G lately?

A weaker dollar means shelling out more of them- that is why people
who understand what is happening are buying what they can, while they can.

For boiling water and such.

I actually want to get some more propane and tanks-
'cause the price of that is going to skyrocket too.

17. I agree - buy staples
For any number of reasons it is a good idea to stock up. The grocery stores depend upon long distance trucking to keep their shelves supplied. And how much of it originates in foreign countries these days? It doesn't take much imagination to see how easily the food supply can be disrupted....whether by natural disaster or manmade.

25. OMG I am in love with Clara!
Thanks for posting this channel-
I just sent it to my daughter who is back packing and couch surfing in Europe.
She is broke, her friends are broke and so perhaps Pasta and Peas with Clara
will help them pass an evening with full bellies for not much money!
Brilliant link- bookmarked!
Thanks!

27. Isn't she adorable!
Her style is so simple - and full of useful hints. Like putting the lid on the pot after it boils, then turning off the burner to save the gas.

Hope it helps your daughter!

29. She IS adorable.
I make a similar dish to that one and always turn off the burner too!
So that cracked me up!
Again, Thanks for sharing such a delightful person.
And, I'm sure it will help my daughter.
She went to Europe for work- it didn't end up being a good deal, so she decided to see some of the world.
It's a good thing.
I just worry about the usual mom things.
Fortunately I put a little money in her account
every few weeks and she is EXTREMELY resourceful at
finding free shelter and food.
Many young people are these days.
More so than many of our generation I'm afraid.

30. Remember the 'Back to the Land' era?
I learned how to can food, make bread, grow veggies and cook a meal out of very little back in the 70's.

I have a feeling such knowledge is going to come in handy again.

33. Heh-heh... so when do we begin production for OUR show?
I have a really interesting cook book form 1908-
Probably one of the first vegetarian cook books ever published in the US.
The recipes are AMAZINGLY simple.
I'll try to dig it out and share the title and author with you.
