an ounce tonight. Sold one there a few weeks ago for over $1,400.00, and now spot gold is like $1,780.00. Just how long can I afford to hang on to these numismatics? They are early 1900 Gold Double Eagles -- one ounce. Just how high will they go before the bubble bursts?

5. If they are early 1900s eagles, they are not one ounce
They would be 15 grams, or a little less than a half ounce, since early 1900s eagles are actually $10 gold pieces. The double eagles ($20 gold coins) contain a little less than one ounce of gold.

6. Sorry, they are Double Eagles.
I also have a couple of of the $10.00 Eagles, which were bringing about $700 or so on eBay a few weeks ago.

7. What are the dates?
Sometimes you can get a bit of extra money if you have better dates, and in better condition.
Also, you have to watch out for ebay, since there are scammers who will buy something from you, then claim it's fake so they don't have to pay you. I would recommend reading up on your coins, and taking them to a coin shop to get them appraised before messing with eBay. If you PM me, I can direct you to a web site where people only talk about coins and they can give you a good idea of the value of what you have, and perhaps direct you to a decent dealer in your area.

I've sold over 100 Silver Dollars along with one Double Eagle on eBay and never had a problem. In fact, I've had over 300 transactions there (buying and selling) and never had a problem.

12. I understand your sentiment, but
There is a huge price difference between silver dollars and double eagles. And the temptation to cheat someone on double eagles is now greater than it has ever been. Also, you have to shell out a lot of money to eBay and PayPal. And you have no idea what the final bid is going to be (that is, it might be way under what you were expecting). It seems like you understand what you actually have, which would be in your favor if you sold your coins to a dealer.

13. There are simply no dealers near me that can come close to the price I get on eBay.
I live out in the boonies, and the small town dealers nearby are a joke. These are nice AU coins, so I have no choice except the internet. Also, I put a reserve price on the coins that is AT LEAST what the spot price of gold or silver is that day. I could probably do a little better driving to a larger metro area, but then I would have to pay for gas and maybe even a motel room. Better just to pay the eBay and PayPal charges and move on. These coins are now worth 6-7 times what I paid for them back in the day, so I can't complain. Some were given to me by relatives.

14. Well, good luck then
I would certainly be interested in knowing what sort of final (net) price for double eagles you can get on the bay.

9. Zero sum game for me.
I shifted 30% of my investments to gold about nine months ago. It is the only thing keeping my 401k at the break-even point now.
