3. And you know what is so ironic? Originally it wasn't even that
it was about conservation. Conservatives way back in the day... and I am talking of almost beginning of last century, were the early environmentalists. It was ABOUT CONSERVATION. John Dean has a very good history on this, in Conservatives Without a Conscience.

4. Yep, they didn't want the government involved but were willing to
give time and money to help people...

Then they just became greedy when Reagan gave them the green light

6. Oh the greed party precedes reagan by at least 100 years
the gilded age was no picnic either... another type of conservatus americanus.

:-)

But some of those greedy people had a social consciousness. Our modern day version, as you rightly noted, does not.

5. Conservatism is and has always been the support of
hierarchy, order, tradition, and traditional authority. Conservatism has always been the ideology of the ruling class who believed that to maintain order you must maintain the status quo.

10. Conservatism
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 12:50 AM by elleng
(Latin: conservare, "to preserve")<1> is a political and social philosophy that promotes the maintenance of traditional institutions and supports, at the most, minimal and gradual change in society. Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others oppose modernism and seek a return to the way things were.

The guys around now are NOT conservatives; they are radicals.

12. I don't like that term because it insults the actual Radical Republicans
who seemed to be fairly progressive for their time. I actually would have preferred their plan as opposed to the 10 percent plan.

14. Conservatism is reactionary and retrograde ideology
Conservatism is opposed to progress as such. It is a reactionary and retrograde ideology and an enemy of any kind of change, except change to a previous state.
