Toles Rant - Let’s all hang separately!
By Tom Toles
Let’s all hang separately!

Say what you want, and everybody does, but here’s the fuel of the conservative frame of mind these days: If you’ve been doing well, you want to keep it all for yourself! That’s pretty straightforward. you earned it, or at least your dad did, and since the fortunate can never admit the ‘good fortune’ as in ‘luck’ part of their good fortune, just the ‘fortune’ as in ‘money’ part, they earned every penny and the government would just ‘waste’ it, as in use it for some purpose other than a second master bath for your new island vacation home.

But let’s face it, not all conservatives are doing all that well these days, as the top one-percent, where all the money is going, can only hold so many people. What makes THEM conservative, as in Tea Party vehement crazy conservative? That’s pretty easy too, though nobody likes to say it out loud. It is that even though they LIKE Social Security and Medicare, which they somehow regard as something that are not really government programs, it’s the gnawing, grinding, intolerable feeling that somebody somewhere is getting a slightly better deal from the government than they are.

So rather than chalk this up to the fact that a society rises and falls together, they have decided they’d rather fall, apart.
