Does anyone recall "tort reform?" |
|
And the republican mantra associated with that? IIRC, it was something to the effect of: "we have to control these runaway lawsuits, especially those relating to medical malpractice, by capping award damages. Once capped, the costs for medical insurance will go down since the financial risk of medical malpractice will not be so high." - Smirking Repbublican Hack /s/
We know how well the foregoing worked for our reducing the $s out of our pockets paid toward medical expenses.
I have been thinking about the foregoing a lot lately in light of the current "cutting taxes = job creation/deficit reduction" being spewed by republicans. Thinking about it because the outcome will, of course, be the same - there wont be any reduction.
Just wondering if anyone else had the same thoughts too.
The sun came up today; it's always darkest before the sun shines.
Peace!

2. Here in Ohio Bob Taft passed some of the most restrictive tort reform in the country |
|
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 11:31 AM by JohnnyRingo
He did it in 2003 and promised that insurance costs would plummet here as a result. The reformed law puts a value cap of $300,000 on a human life and we now enjoy the lowest rates in the country. Wait!... No we don't.
Another GOP canard that says if we kiss the asses of big business they voluntarily share their profits. Why do people keep falling for this crap? I imagine conservatives here pick up their little girl and tell her "I love you so much I wouldn't trade you for less than three hundred thousand dollars".

4. A recent documentary called Hot Coffee exposes the fraud of tort "reform." |
|
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 11:31 AM by Democrats_win
The documentary shows clips of George W. Bush saying again and again "tort reform." They even included this gem: "Too many OB/GYN's aren't able to practice their love with women all across the country."
The term Hot Coffee refers to that infamous case where a lady was burned by hot coffee she had purchased at McDs. HOWEVER, most Americans were completely unaware of the facts in that case. The woman clearly deserved to be compensated. The coffee was simply too hot and McDs had 700 complaints but did nothing. This is what tort law is for! They caused harm and they needed to pay. In the end, they didn't pay nearly the amount that was originally publicized.
Not only do we have the Republican/crooked-business axis working on tort "reform," but we also have them working to get rid of judges that they don't own. The documentary describes an outlandish scheme by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to get rid of such a judge. It is simply ridiculous how much money they spent. America has been downgraded but it's not S&P, it's the Republo-crooks.
