Obama campaign mulls attacks on Mitt Romney’s religion
Source: Raw Story
By Megan Carpentier

President Barack Obama's advisers consider former governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) their most likely opponent in 2012, according to Ben Smith and Johnathan Martin of Politico. And so, in the words of one anonymous Democratic strategist, they are going to try to "kill" him by borrowing the tactics used by then-President George W. Bush (R) against Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) in 2004: portray him as waffling and "inauthentic" and, in an oft-used word, "weird."

Why weird? Martin and Smith offer one explanation:

None of the Obama advisers interviewed made any suggestion that Romney's personal qualities would be connected to his minority Mormon faith, but the step from casting Romney as a bit off to raising questions about religion may not be a large step for some of the incumbent's supporters.

It's not the first time Romney has faced questions about his faith from his political opponents: during the last presidential campaign, Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) staff was wont to make mention of it particularly often. It became a big enough issue that Romney himself addressed his religious beliefs in a speech in late 2007 that tied his own difficulties to those faced by then-Sen. John F. Kennedy during his own Presidential run.

1. Ohh. Dear
I know the mormons are not particularly popular here at DU,
but attacking the man's faith is the LOW ROAD.

I smell fear and desperation.

11. I remember conservatives attacked Rev White...
....over some things he has said over the years.

...Eventually, Obama stuck his finger into the wind, gauges it's direction, and turned around and joined the attack on Rev. White.

2. Pure speculation and thus disinformation...
From the article:
None of the Obama advisers interviewed made any suggestion that Romney's personal qualities would be connected to his minority Mormon faith

4. Politico fiction again?
With an article filled with anonymous "advisors"? And DU falls for it every time. :boring:

5. Actually, Raw Story fiction. They used the Politico article to come to a conclusion with "facts"
not in evidence.

8. I call BS
Why attack his Mormon faith when there are so many much better reasons to attack him, like the constant flip-flopping, the Wall Street ties, the fact that he does not now and never has stood for anything, and now the campaign money-laundering?

10. What a bunch of garbage. Romney is weird without even thinking of what his religion is.
People always complain that Dems aren't tough or ruthless enough in attacking Republicans but there is a group on the left that attacks and smears (nobody said anything about Romney's religion) any attempts or even hints of going after Republicans.

Obama's a wimp and needs to fight.

Obama's being mean to Mitt Romney.

Truly Pathetic.

Sam Seder tweeted that "weird" really means "Mormon".

Bullshit!

Weird means weird, odd, awkward.

Not everyone straps their dog to the top of their car and drives with them up there for hours on end with poop and pee coming down the car.

He.is.friggin.weird.

"Democrats" need to stop being so anxious to attack Obama that they run around defending Republicans.

12. I seriously doubt this. Obama's got the same campaign team, and this isn't their style.

There's so, so many other things to attack Mittens on, anyway. They're not going to risk a backlash.
