2. That's hilarious...
...#7 could arguably have been used after cropping and airbrushing the man out of the background, it is the least crazy of the lot.

Other than that, she obviously has little reason to feel miffed, because just as many of us have said, the picture showed her just as she is: insane.

8. #4 would also have been a better choice
although it does show her hands in a prayer pose and that would have garnered criticism. I'm no fan of this twit but Newsweek made a deliberate choice to highlight the crazy look. They should at least own up to it.

11. I disagree with your assessment of Newsweek...
...it looks to me like all of the photos but one (arguably) show "the crazy". Certainly the one with her in a prayer pose would have garnered just as much criticism had they used it -- people would have accused them of using it to scare voters.

If 9 of 10 photos show "the crazy", then wouldn't it be dishonest to choose the one photo that does not show it? Wouldn't that be worthy of criticism in its own right, showing that Newsweek was covering up, the way the media always did for GWB?

15. First off, the Beast gallery is described as "more images" from the shoot, not all images.
Secondly, Tina Brown's lame defense of the cover shot IMHO supports the notion that it was chosen with the intent of showing Bachmann as a zealot ("crazy") because that supports the cover description of her.
The photographer could have shot her from a different angle and she still would have the intensity (as in pose #4) without "the crazy."

Finally, media choosing unflattering photos is not news. Check out any image of Pelosi or other Democrats on FOX for example.

16. "media choosing unflattering photos is not news"...
...indeed. That is part of my point, although not all of it. The other part is, Bachmann IS crazy. She LOOKS crazy. I've seen dozens of photos of her, from different outlets, and I'd say on average 3 of 5 show "the crazy". That is a conservative estimate BTW. So showing a non-crazy shot would arguably be misleading.

I don't see that Newsweek has anything to "own up to" other than publishing a photo that gives a truthful representation of the woman.

12. I dont get the fuss
She always looks expressive and her face hides nothing. I have that type of face--can't hide what I'm thinking and can't play poker. She's the same way.
Who was the first pundit that said this was a Newsweek hit job? I call BS. This was probably one of the better pics they had to choose from at the time without resorting to stock pics.

I mean, yeah, she's nuts. This is not news.

17. It speaks to a relational deficit that her expressions of "warmth"
are misaimed and over the top. She doesn't have a solid sense of where she is or where the other person is in space. Creepy.

23. Is she wearing contacts that give her eyes that weird gleam?
I keep wondering if she's about to transform into a werewolf. The "smiling with her mouth open" thing looks like she's about to bite somebody, too.

And I thought I took a bad picture. Damn.

27. Is it possible that Newsweek needs to find a competent photographer ...
other photographers appear to take better pictures of Michele Bachmann.

It is also strange that there were only 9 out takes. Hell, If I want a portrait of someone, I take 20 to 30 pictures. Note: at the best I could be considered an amateur.

I did a Google image search for Bachmann: There are some good pictures, quite a few with crazy eyes and some humorous pictures.

http://www.google.com/search?q=michele+bachmann&oe=utf-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1366&bih=607

One of the better ones in my opinion, was this one.

Look, I don't seriously want to ever see a Bachmann presidency, but I do get upset when I see obvious media bias against female candidates who run for the presidency, even when they are conservative.

Bachmann has proven to be quite capable of self destructing in the past. Why should the media offer her any opportunity to garner sympathy or be viewed as an underdog? All the media has to do is fairly report what she says and point out glaring errors. She can prove all by herself, just like Sarah Palin, that she is not qualified to be president.
