A Starbucks Card for the Entire Internet
Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 01:11 PM by blogslut
Via, http://laughingsquid.com/jonathan-stark-posts-starbucks-card-online-for-entire-internet-to-use">Laughing Squid:

App developer Jonathan Stark has posted the barcode to his Starbucks coffee card online so that anyone can get free coffee using his account. The card has a Twitter account, which tweets when the card is used or its balance is depleted (a frequent occurrence). Stark has also given instructions on how generous types can replenish the card’s funds online–a spin on the “take-a-penny, leave-a-penny” dish at a convenience store...

EDIT ADD: In Jonathan's words:

...Jonathan's Card is an experiment in social sharing of physical goods using digital currency on mobile phones. I stumbled on the idea while doing research related to my work with Mobiquity related to Broadcasting Mobile Currency.

Based on the similarity to the "take a penny, leave a penny" trays at convenience stores in the US, I've adopted a similar "get a coffee, give a coffee" terminology for Jonathan's Card.

As it turns out, this is actually a new take on a wonderful old italian custom called Caffe Pagato, which translates to English as "Coffee Paid". Thanks to Francesco Pierfederici for alerting me to this article: Italian Lifestyle: the "caffe' pagato" (paid coffee) Custom...

1. No thanks -- I'll stay with Peete's.
I don't like that Seattle-based wannabe, Starbucks.

5. I've been following the Twitter feed all day
The balance goes down, it fills back up. It's really pretty wonderful. People are buying and giving at a very regular rate.

7. Maybe, if it's successful
Someone will try this with a grocery store card. Maybe cap the withdrawal at $25.00 - which I'm guessing is why starting with a Starbuck's card is a brilliant idea because purchases from there are relatively small. I can tell you from experience, $25.00 or even $5.00 to a hungry person can mean everything.

10. Very true. Unfortunately, I'm a technological nightmare.
I am in possession of a smart phone and have no idea how to put the photo on it.

Then save it that way?

9. This reminds me of the times when "pay it backward" lines have started at fast food or
coffee shops, with people paying for the meals or coffees of those who come behind them.
