Edited on Tue Aug-09-11 04:49 PM by SoCalDem
and in the end 12 people get to decide how many of us will end up living in cardboard boxes as we dine on dumpster scraps.
What a country:(

11. If they can't come to an agreement aren't auto cuts enacted? |
|
Which would likely hurt entitlements, no?

12. That decision was made by Congress when it enacted the legislation. |

This in no way changes the fundamental structure of our government.

4. Don't the committee recommendations have to be approved by the full House and Senate and President? |
|
And wasn't the deal that this all came from voted on by all members of congress?

8. It strengthens the Republican controlled House at the expense |
|
of the Democratic controlled Senate.
Supposedly the Democrats have the numerical advantage in the Senate, thus taking away the filibuster damages them more than it does the Republicans.

....but isn't filibuster the primary offensive tool of the minority in the Senate?

14. Yes and the Progressive/Liberal supporters of FDR and LBJ's social policies are a minority |
|
in the Senate.
The majority of the Senate all Republicans and some Democrats have bought into the Reagan agenda of corporate supremacy, the difference is a matter of degree.
Three Senate Republican appointees will be outright corporate supremacists as will at least one Democratic Senator, that's a majority.
The House appointees will be even more skewed because the Republicans control it.
Thus while the Democrats control the Senate with a majority on the surface level, they gave up their best defensive weapon against overwhelming cuts against Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other critical social programs important to the American People and the Progressive/Liberal wing of the Democratic Party.

Let's be fair. It's more like 170 million Americans (55 - 60 percent voter turnout?) send 535 people to DC.
Given the 12 person committee, that breaks down to about 1 representative for every 14,000,000 voters.
Ah, the good old US of A. :patriot: :patriot: :patriot:
:sarcasm: Not sure if this is really needed.

13. Perhaps we could have an election to determine who was in the Super Congress ... |
|
It would be like the primaries in states where you have to be a registered Democrat to vote in the Democratic primary and a registered Republican to vote in the Republican primary. Of course this would be held at the national level.
That way we would at least get to vote for the people who are going to royally screw us. Of course that would be unconstitutional as should the entire idea of a Super Congress.
I was thinking that the people in the Super Congress should get super pay. Than I just realized that they will -- from the super rich and the super corporations.
