there is no inflation, people! Except in your noggins!
Crude oil hit $147 in 2008! Its $81/bbl now!

Natural gas is $3.90 now after being over $10 in the mid 2000s.

Rice, Corn, Soy, and other staples are well off 2008 highs. Coffee is up though - a luxury item for most.

But most importantly - 30yrs are selling like hotcakes for a 4% yield. Yes, it you overpaid for a 6-oz bag of cheese INFLATION is real!

1. I will keep that in mind when I do price advances
this week at the grocery store where I work.

There may not be any inflation, but certainly seems to be something odd going on..:banghead:

2. That's actually the problem ... We still do need a little bit of it in the right places

Deflation will freak you out. Ask the Japanese.

On balance though, I think we'll make it through just fine.

4. Nice, but we aren't buy commodities but rather groceries. Groceries are higher
and packages are shrinking.

I don't see anything cheaper in the meat section, produce is way high, canned goods are higher, dairy is higher, it is all high. Combine this with stagnant or falling wages and you have effective inflation.

Add in higher rents and utility bills (despite the cheaper NG) and people are really struggling. Put escalating health insurance premiums and ever rising child care costs and it is really hard.

8. Maybe a tacky subject
but anyone who still has an old roll of TP laying around should compare the width of it with the new and improved rolls. They're about an inch narrower, but the same price as before.

That's inflation. And while that's just one product, its happening with everything. And selections are shrinking, as well.

The sewer bill went up a buck fifty this month. For the exact same service as last month and all the months before that. And while it's easy to ignore because it isn't all THAT much of an increase and most people won't even notice it, figure a buck fifty times 20 or 30 thousand customers and you're talking real money. So are they upgrading the system? Who knows. If so, they didn't give any indication of it. Nor do they have to. They have a monopoly.

11. That is not inflation. That is a corporate marketing department grifting the hell
out of the consumer.

18. I beg your pardon
inflation

Definition The overall general upward price movement of goods and services in an economy (often caused by a increase in the supply of money), usually as measured by the Consumer Price Index and the Producer Price Index. Over time, as the cost of goods and services increase, the value of a dollar is going to fall because a person won't be able to purchase as much with that dollar as he/she previously could.

I'd say that's backward, but does your dollar go further than mine does?

You didn't hear Greenspan say not to worry about how many more dollars it takes to keep consuming, they'll just print more dollars? And each time they do, each dollar is worth less. Soon you'll need a wheelbarrow. Oh wait, they forestalled that little problem with debit and credit cards.

7. Sounds like a load of RepubliCon claptrap to me
and does not translate to the supermarket, the gas pump, or anywhere else that real American citizens do business.

So maybe things are hunky dory for the fatcat Repbublicons buying commodities for speculation & profit, but...

...its the shits for all of us proles.

Nice try at obfuscation, tho.

12. Yet at 81/bbl we're paying gas prices like it's 147/bbl
Natural gas? Don't use it.

I don't buy that the staples are cheaper now than then, when you look at actual retail price. Unless you're buying 10,000 bushels, the futures price for a commodity is meaningless.

Put all of that together, plus the attitude of the post, and I unrec this thread.

15. We are in a sad deflation spiral - wages are falling, home prices
are falling, and account balances are falling.

The Fed needs to move to a massive new QE3 program like Krugman says to.

I think you are talking about a Fed that gives a shit about its citizens. I don't know that Fed.
