A few months ago I listened to part of a discussion on the radio about this story, and the conclusion they arrived at was that the whole story was probably FALSE, and was little more than Romney again trying to be a regular "guy". He misspoke and then spun it out a whole other way which only made it worse..
Here's why:
The guy is freaking RICH..
does anyone really believe that he piles his family into a car & DRIVES several hours to their palatial "lake house"?
People like HIM hire a plane, and are met by "staff" when they arrive.. If there is no "staff", they have a car waiting for them..
They do not pack all their stuff to haul it there// They are not Ma,Pa & kids heading out on a cross-country adventure as they stop in desperation at Super 8's. They have everything they could possibly need, already AT the lake house.
He wants so desperately to have people believe that he's a "regular guy" who lives like they do, that he spins yarns that go horribly awry..with the family dog strapped to the car roof, on a journey that probably never even happened:)

1. He is a product of his times, though.. This story would have dated back... |

to when his kids were young--the early sixties--at least from what I can tell. While he had inherited money, that would have been before his despicable big $$ earned through outsourcing jobs with Bain Capitol. I don't think it would be so unlikely, given his Morman Michigan-Utah roots that he would have done the family car trip. Regardless, he tells a story so horrific to me that if true he ought to have faced animal cruelty charges and if fabricated, should be exposed as well as the complete and utter fool/liar that he is.

2. In the early sixties HE would have been the kid.. His kids were young |
|
in the 80's..
He did his mission in 1966 & married in 1969
Bain Capital came along in 1983....
his kids came in 1970,1971,1975,1978 & 81
and even before Bain, he was rich..through family connections..
Remember too, that the 80's were a time of flaunting wealth.. He's revamping history and not doing a great job of it:)

3. I thought he was older than that... |

Regardless, I intend to spread that story far and wide. True or a Romney fabrication, it is devastating to him--as it should be.

This story has been out for ages - nobody cares. They either think it's an exaggeration, or they just don't care about animal cruelty.
Sorry to be such a Debbie Downer but I bet if you searched DU, you could probably find a post of me saying a few years ago exactly what you're saying now. I over-estimated the American people then. Sadly, you're over-estimating the American people now.

10. the story only appeared in Newsweek or Time (can't remember which) |
|
and didn't get a lot of media discussion. Those who I have informed on the issue and given them a source to read for themselves have been aghast. I actually think it would resonate if it were revisited.

6. Has he ever denied it? |

I mean, plausibly? Probably not, which is why Team Obama is bringing this up again.

11. I thought he was the one who told the story or put it in a book or something? |

I could be wrong, but that was my recollection ...

the FIVE sons, of which none could be bothered to serve in the military. Especially to fight in wars their daddy supported and promoted. I almost forgot, Mittens said they "serve the country by working on his campaign".

9. Maybe he just enjoys tormenting small animals. |

I do think there is a Republican precedent for that.
