Scott Walker Signs Redistricting Bill On Day Of Recall Elections
Gov. Walker uses the chaos of election day to mask his signing of Republican-protection maps into law

MADISON – Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) released the following statement on Gov. Walker’s decision to sign the highly partisan, divisive Republican redistricting plan into law today, on election day, in apparent hopes that the public’s attention was diverted as he took this extremely partisan action:

“In a recent national television appearance, Gov. Walker pledged to move forward in a bipartisan manner. But today’s blatant, partisan power grab by Gov. Walker is proof that he has absolutely zero interest in uniting Wisconsin and that his bipartisan pledge was strictly rhetoric. It is now clear that Gov. Walker signed these redistricting maps into law in a manner intended to hide his actions with only one goal in mind: giving himself and his fellow Republicans a monopoly on power in our state and dodging accountability for their anti-middle-class extremism.

“Gov. Walker knows his poll numbers are plummeting and that Wisconsinites have rejected his extreme, polarizing agenda. And virtually every Wisconsin newspaper editorial on redistricting has strongly criticized the Republican plan. So Gov. Walker is trampling democracy by tossing aside longstanding communities of interest and minority voting rights to hold onto power for himself.

“The Governor had an opportunity to exercise leadership here and by signing this heavily gerrymandered, highly partisan redistricting plan into law, he failed to lead. Vetoing these maps would have helped to heal some of the wounds caused by Gov. Walker’s past partisan actions – eliminating worker rights, cutting job training and devastating public education – but once again he chose to stand with extremists in his own party rather than with the people of our state.
