60% of the Value of All Goods sold in the U.S. are Imported

Today, an “American” car sold in Chicago may have rolled off an assembly line in Tennessee with parts made in a dozen different countries. Last year, some 60 percent of the value of goods sold in the U.S. was imported. That's up from 14 percent in 1980 and 8 percent in 1960, based on the government's gross domestic product data.

So what does it mean to be "Made in America"?

A product has to be “all or virtually all” produced in the United States (or one of its territories or protectorates) to stamp "Made in America" on its packaging or advertising, according to Federal Trade Commission regulations. Among its various mandates, the FTC is charged with policing false or misleading claims about products sold in the U.S.

The basic premise is fairly simple: A product that is "Made in America" has to be assembled, and most of the cost of making the product incurred, in the United States. But that’s where things start to get a little tricky. (And that’s why it takes 40 pages to explain the rules.)

1. I thought of this article today and went back and reread it as well.
It does a decent job of making one think about how much we don't do here anymore, even if we're producing the majority of our own energy. Which of course we always did before, too.

2. It's a broken model by default. And then it's band-aided. I have no idea why
anyone could be surprised at the mess we are in. It's not even Econ 101 to see what is causing our financial headaches. So, no solutions because the skimmers are getting very wealthy.

9. As the title of that clearly says, Chinese goods represent 3% of consumer spending in the US

You keep pretending that means "3% of imported goods are Chinese". I'm not sure why.

7. It is probably a lot less than 60%
A "US" company branded item manufactured in the Far East and sold in a "US" store probably leaves the Far East at about 25% of its selling price. General and administrative expense, R&D, marketing, etc. of the "US" manufacturer probably account for 25%, and the transportation, warehousing, distribution and retailing expenses in the US account for the other 50%.

An example would be a Western Digital hard drive sold at Best Buy.
