Mother Fuckers!
Vet ID holders cannot vote?
Bill would exclude those with only that.
By Brian Chasnoff

Updated 11:59 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2011

Local Democrats are up in arms about a controversial voter ID bill that would exclude veterans' identification cards from the short list of photo IDs required to cast a vote in Texas.

Ann McGeehan, director of the Secretary of State's elections division, said last week at a seminar in Austin that photo ID cards issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are not acceptable forms of military ID to vote, according to a recording provided by the Texas Democratic Party.

Jordy Keith, a spokeswoman for the secretary of state, backpedaled Friday on that determination.

“It was an informal Q&A, and (McGeehan) was answering based on what was expressly called out in Senate Bill 14,” Keith said. “Right now our office has not issued a final determination on that.”

Passed after Gov. Rick Perry declared voter ID an emergency issue in the last session, the strict bill is touted by Republicans as a way to reduce voter fraud but decried by Democrats as an effort to lower voter turnout among minorities and the elderly, disabled and poor.

1. I guess a federally issued ID that many folks DO HAVE
and is easier than a passport to get is not good... (Ok as long as you are a vet that is)

5. Actually, veteran's ID does not mean that its holder is a US citizen.
And many veterans are not, which makes them ineligible to vote.

15. Two years ago I had to renew my TX driver's license.
First thing they say is that "My citizenship status was in question"
HUH? This is a DRIVER'S license, not a citizenship license.
I ended up having to dig up my original Austrian birth certificate, the original notarized translation thereof, the original State Department form DS-1350 Certification of Birth-which proved I am an American citizen by birth, my DD-214 and then I still had to argue with the clowns.

Then they asked me why I hadn't provided all this before and I replied that in 1974 when I applied for my TX driver's license, none of this was asked of me.

17. May I ask hobbit?
Is your skin tone darker than day glo white?

I had the same experience circa 70's when I applied for my TX license - in and out. However, that was in San'tone and I was in AF blues.

As you probably know, if the AF ever bailed out of San'tone, the place would dry up and blow away. So Zoomies get hand waved - a lot.

14. Yeah. Tommy Atkins all over again
Isn't eligibility established at time of registration? All a photo ID should do is confirm identity. So why would a VA ID card be any less valid than a driver's license?

Doesn't come close to passing the smell test.

Why should anyone volunteering to fight and die in the USA's military not be conferred instant U.S. citizenship?

37. That is a very good question, to which I don't have an answer.
Really, what's the advantage of having foreign citizens fight US wars potentially against their own countries?
It would be more logical either to not let them enlist at all or to swear them into citizenship simultaneously
with their military oath.

26. This is just amazing...
A veteran comes back from seeing hell only to be kicked in the face by Americans telling them, "Sorry this VA card is worthless for voting." even though, it clearly shows your photo on it and proves you are a bona fide Veteran of the United States Military. So much, for Republican's respect for the Military.

baaaaaaaaaka.

29. I can't imagine why this would be so. When this gets out, Texans will be outraged.
All Texans, I imagine.

I wonder if the thinking is that there would be a lot of hispanic veterans in Texans? I expect veterans IDs will be acceptable, once the powers that be realize how many of them are Republican.

33. Happens in Indiana too
I think we were the first state in the wave of photo ID voting laws. First election out of the gate a bunch of retired nuns who don't drive were denied the vote. A local vet wrote our small town paper after 2008, steamed over exactly this - he was turned down trying to use his veteran's ID.

The current frontier in vote denial here is a combination of shutting down Secretary of State offices and consolidation of polls in just a few "voting centers." Since the only people who deserve to vote are people with cars...

35. Passed after Gov. Rick Perry declared voter ID an emergency issue in the last session
So that's where NC Repugs got the idea!

I had a deluded conservative buddy all cocky about how the NC legislature overrode the Dem governor's veto of a voter picture ID bill

He was all worried about Mexicans voting... or something. I told him it wasn't needed in the last election. "You guys won". Why do we need it all of a sudden: just like the Gov said: to make it harder for the poor and blacks to vote.

The country is in a bunch of wars, there are no jobs, the economy sux big time, and they're worried that Mexicans might vote illegally. What a bunch of utter crap.
