3. they serve a very simple purpose: they make other Republicans look more reasonable

and pull the debate right to where the GOP wants it.

The Tea Party also gives cover to the conservative Dems for STARTING negotiations at what just a few years ago were orthodox Republican positions by being far to the right of them.
