Steele made a good point on Rachel's show. We need a Progressive unifying focus.
Note: it was not the point he was trying to make, but Rachel was commenting that when Wisconsin Dems got behind Union Rights, it got things done. Even though they didn't recall enough pukes to take the State House, they achieved a near stalemate with the pukes holding a one seat lead...that being the only puke to vote against the union stripping bill. Less than 24 hours after the Dems held on to their two recalled seats, Kasich in Ohio is ready do deal...as he sees overwhelming support for a popular override to Ohio's union stripping bill.

Ok, Michael Steele's accidental point. He said that just as the teabaggers spoke with one voice and affected change, the Dems need to get a unifying voice. Union Rights Now won't really fly for Dems outside of heavy union areas. Steele claimed the baggers unified over Constitutional rights, but we all know they unified over "Get the black guy out".

We Dems need a rally call and focus point to get us through 2012. "Union Strong" is great but won't play outside of traditional union areas.

What can be our singular focus, our battle cry between now and then? If we are loud and stubborn enough maybe we can affect the Dems in Congress and Obama in the same manner that the teabaggers did the pukes in Congress. If we are hard core, loud, and unflappable maybe we can initiate a Progressive swing of the pendulum back to the left.

What should it be?

1. Agree, but I don't know if we could HAVE one voice -- just
look at DU! We're not united in racism, hatred and fear - I think those are the basics holding them together.

2. Sorry to be cynical, but it's going to be hard to find that here.
Our community is divided like no other. We are in a load of trouble if we are going to wait until there is a GOP nominee to unify against. But thats the path we are headed for. We should be organizing right now, but instead we liberals are choosing to argue with each other rather than get to work.

Sad.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=1758164&mesg_id=1758164

It's tough to bring the party together when the leadership is trying their best to keep us divided. Divisiveness is a horrible political strategy.

7. Exactly ... Obama is ignoring the will of the people on wars, health care and jobs/economy--!!!
And moving further and further to the right --

This isn't about improving anything but money in corporate pockets/elites pockets --

even if it destroys the Dem Party --

Thom Hartmann was talking about Boehner or McConnell the other day and saying that when

they retire they'll move off to Koch Bros. jobs -- $5 million a year.

We are being betrayed by dishonest men among us who are sworn to uphold the Constitution!!

4. Reflecting comments here, remember 'organizing' Dems is like herding cats;
it REALLY IS, we are ALL independent, as we can see clearly here at DU. repugs take full advantage of this fact of life, unfortunately.

Our problems are internatlly with the Dem Party which seems to be under the

control still of Koch Bros. funded DLC -- a legacy we're going to have to give

a lot of thought to!! What is left of the party after 20 years of Koch Bros

infiltration and influence?

Let's unite to find a challenger to Obama for 2012 -- a liberal challenger!

Democrats have to give up their Reaganomics and we know that ain't going to happen.

Edited on Thu Aug-18-11 05:06 AM by Waiting For Everyman
For me, that is everything in one basket... jobs and wages, taxing the uber-rich, healthcare, foreclosures, banking reform and prosecutions, lobbying, media, energy, trade, agriculture, election reform, student debt slavery, privatizing government functions, the wars, everything.

16. How about "Save the American Dream"?
The teabaggers have their ideals of a past golden age -- well we have ours.

They include but are not limited to maintaining union rights. They include the legacy of the New Deal. And they include bringing everyone into that same dream -- black and white, gay and straight, and all points in between.

The centerpiece of our dream is the ideal of a rewarding life:

- The right to an affordable education that will prepare you for meaningful employment that applies your skills and knowledge while contributing in a positive way to society.

- The right to marry and raise a family, the leisure to spend time enjoying family life, the ability to provide that family with adequate food, shelter, and health care.

- The right to an old age free of fear and deprivation and the specter of becoming a burden on others.

Those are the central progressive goals. They're not that hard to articulate. They cover most progressive objectives. And they are very much under threat.

18. Climate change is the pressing crisis before us.
All progressive values and goals can be achieved by making that the focus.

Sustainabe development, social and economic justice, and conservation - everything you can think of - can be solved if we view it in terms of fighting for policies that combat climate change
