Good News: Honor Is Alive
Edited on Thu Aug-18-11 01:36 AM by Tace
Of all the circumstances and events that have contributed to my general disillusionment with the world around me, the toughest thing has been the my eventual understanding that all of our institutions and (nearly) all of our leaders are corrupt.

I've been living in rural Vermont for the past several years, in the beauty of the Green Mountains, along with Moose, Coyote, Bear, Hawks, Ermine, Beaver, hummingbirds and a lot of other wildlife that used to be just about everywhere, but now isn't.

Something else is alive and well here that seems to be extinct in many other places: Honor.

It warms my heart that, as I read the news each day about our depraved "leaders" and their large-scale predatory ripoff of their fellow man, there's still at least a pocket of us up here in central Vermont who are being true and looking out for one-another. I like to think we're not alone, that there are millions of other good-hearted people still fighting the good fight, people who still believe in the ideals of goodness, kindness and compassion, people who operate under the assumption that, in the end, good will prevail.

Ultimately, honor is our greatest treasure. As the poles melt, and the cities flood, as the Masters of War wage their ultimate carnage on the billions of innocent people, there will still be the honorable among us, and we'll do what we've done all along: work to make the world a better place for all.

Count on it.

3. Don Quixote would agree...

ALDONZA: Why do you do these things?

DON QUIXOTE
What things?

ALDONZA
These ridiculous... the things you do!

DON QUIXOTE
I hope to add some measure of grace to the world.

ALDONZA
The world's a dung heap and we are maggots that crawl on it!

DON QUIXOTE
My Lady knows better in her heart.

ALDONZA
What's in my heart will get me halfway to hell.
And you, Señor Don Quixote-you're going to take
such a beating!

DON QUIXOTE
Whether I win or lose does not matter.

ALDONZA
What does?

DON QUIXOTE
Only that I follow the quest.

ALDONZA
(spits)
That for your Quest!
(turns, marches away; stops, turns bock
and asks, awkwardly)
What does that mean... quest?

DON QUIXOTE
It is the mission of each true knight...
His duty... nay, his privilege!
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go;
To right the unrightable wrong.

To love, pure and chaste, from afar,
To try, when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star!

This is my Quest to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far,
To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march into hell
For a heavenly cause!

And I know, if I'll only be true
To this glorious Quest,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this,
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach the unreachable stars!
