Trump on Libya: ‘Why won’t we take over the oil?’

Donald Trump made his usual Monday appearance on Fox and Friends, and again made some eyebrow-raising statements.

Trump was asked his thoughts on the development of Libya and the U.S.’s handling of the situation. Not surprisingly, the business mogul had some passionate sentiments.

“We are NATO,” Trump said. “We back NATO in terms of money and weapons, what do we get out of it? We have all of these rebels running around, beautiful name ‘rebels,’ are they from Iran, who is going to take over Libya, who’s going to take over the oil?”

That self-questioning prompted The Apprentice host to believe that America should reward itself for the events in Tripoli.

“So what do we get out of it, and why won’t we take over the oil?” he said. “Why aren’t we reimbursing? You know in the old days, when you win a war, you ‘kept to the victor, belongs the spoils.’”

Trump added: “We fight all of these wars, we get nothing. We have a trillion-five in Iraq, and it’s starting to fall apart. What do we get out of all of this things? To me, it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

“When they came to us, begging for help, because he (Gaddafi) was routing them, wouldn’t you say, ‘We’re going to help you, but when and if you are successful, we get half of your oil.’”

“All of those rebels are going to be richer than the people of this country because they will take the oil.”

After Trump’s comments, actor and guest Rob Lowe asked him if he would reconsider a run for the Presidency. But Trump declined on the request, saying “I’m better off where I’m at right now.”

It's the same mantra that industrialists have had about using the natural resources of other nations since the robber baron days, that we should take them for our use and the nationals be damned except for use as cheap labor. It's time we changed how we view things as a nation and as far as I'm concerned all our mining and natural resource interests should be nationalized and used for the benefit of the American people, not Wall Street and corporate interests. Then we should adopt a foreign policy based on that which says hands off other nation's assets except in fair trade.
