Marco Rubio: Medicare, Social Security ‘Weakened Us As People’, Made Us Lazy |
|
These programs actually weakened us as a people. You see, almost forever, it was institutions in society that assumed the role of taking care of one another. If someone was sick in your family, you took care of them. If a neighbor met misfortune, you took care of them. You saved for your retirement and your future because you had to. We took these things upon ourselves in our communities, our families, and our homes, and our churches and our synagogues. But all that changed when the government began to assume those responsibilities. All of a sudden, for an increasing number of people in our nation, it was no longer necessary to worry about saving for security because that was the government’s job.
Hey, douchbag rubio, you can't save for retirement when your job is in India. You can't buy health care when the premiums go up 20% a year.

3. But we HAVE been saving , that's #1. And what individuals with no families? I'd say |
|
that Medicare and Social Security made us a stronger people, a connected people. These people think of themselves as islands, and they don't care about anyone else.

6. "institutions in society" |
|
let me see, can I think of one word that could replace "institutions in society"? That's such an unwieldly circumlocution. "Institution" is some thing that is built, usually by a group of people -- and "society", well, that's ALL the people together. So what would we call something that was built up by all the people together? I got it!
GOVERNMENT!

9. How does this dirtball get elected IN FLORIDA??!! |
|
How many seniors voted for this sack of shite?! And why??!! :wtf:
P.S. People still save for retirement. That is, unless their 401(k)s get wiped out by his greedy Wall Street buddies.
P.P.S. If you have to give up your job to care for a sick and/or elderly family member, you are that much more likely to join the crush of foreclosures that have ruined Florida's (particularly South Florida's) real estate market.

They think Rubio is their grand-son.
Actually, the Florida Democratic Party is so incompetent and corrupt that they can't field any decent candidates. Alex Sink? Not even close. Kendrick Meek? Born loser.
And watch Bill Nelson get tossed next year. It's bad enough that he's a DINO, but the repukes are already running the Sink model against him. The Republican Governors Assn, and Karl Rove's GPS are already peppering the airwaves with anti-Nelson ads.
And by the time Nelson wakes up and leaves his C-Street prayer meeting, he'll be toast. He ain't running against a lunatic Katherine Harris this time.

11. Are there no prisons? Workhouses? |
|
“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.
“Plenty of prisons,” said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.
“And the Union workhouses?” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”
“They are. Still,” returned the gentleman, “ I wish I could say they were not.”
“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?” said Scrooge.
“Both very busy, sir.”
“Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,” said Scrooge. “I’m very glad to hear it.”
This is the reality of right wing society and this is what we are heading for again if they have their way.

12. Attention senator Rubio. Social Security is a savings program. Each of my paychecks has a |
|
deduction in the amount of 6.2% and the employer pays an identical amount. The amount paid by the employer is part of the surplus workers create through our labor. This surplus also allows for contributions to a pension plan, although such plans are nearing extinction while our wages have been stagnant for 35 years.

their elderly, took care of their households.
he'd like it to be that way again, & it will be.
domestic service used to be a huge industry in the us. the upper-middle & the rich, and even the middle, used domestics. this culture vanished during the post-war era (except for the rich). why? because there were better jobs.
it's changing again. i now know moderately wealthy people who have household "staff", personal assistants, etc. this is a consequence of the increasingly skewed distribution of income & wealth. highly stratified societies have large servant classes. always. and highly stratified societies are not very productive societies -- workers are engaged in learning "skills" like how to stoop and bow most obsequiesly.

Grandma gets to sit around the heated retirement home rather than living hand to fist on the local steam grate. The one she had to fight that other Grandma to get. And she just goes to the dining room where people put food in front of her instead of having to dumpster dive for somebody's partially eaten Big Mac. Think of how much more physically fit she would be if she had to jump in and out of dumpsters. Lazy, lazy, lazy!!!

Take a look around them and ask themselves if they really, really think anyone in that audience would help them with tens of $1000's in medical costs, let alone help them cross the street.
On edit: Maybe he should look up the history of those programs and why they were needed to begin with...because churches and neighbors weren't taking care of people, let alone family members being able to. And that was when most households had only one working person, so someone was home to take care of elderly relatives which ended up breaking many families financially.
