MLK Statue makes King Family $800K - Anybody see this?
So this was the meme at the office yesterday, and I didn't see it discussed anywhere on DU then or now. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
Everyone was up in arms from the link provided at Drudge Report, which was to a sad little Rethug weblog named Sad Hill News. (http://sadhillnews.com/2011/08/23/martin-luther-cha-ching-jr-%E2%80%93-family-charges-foundation-800000-for-use-of-mlks-likeness)

Here is original link to the news from NY Post:

WASHINGTON -- The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s family has charged the foundation building a monument to the civil-rights leader on the National Mall about $800,000 to use his words and image -- and at least one scholar thinks that Dr. King would find such an arrangement offensive.

I don't see the controversy. Someone straighten me out.

2. what I find offensive is not the memorial or funding
or what have you, but that it was not done with American Granite or designed or done by an American artist. It is symbolic as to where we are with the insanity of globalization.

4. I know Fuck the Post but what about the story?
Not the story about the granite.

About the Pulitzer-Prize-winning biographer of King saying he would be "scandalized" by the news that his family took money for his own memorial.

6. Here ya go.
The family pledged that any money derived would go back to the King Center's charitable efforts.

Who would support copyright of "Let he is without sin cast the first stone"?

8. This thing was outsourced to China, looks very little like MLK.
And it was "assembled" in the US (just like your Camry!) by cheap imported Chinese labor!

What a fucking boondoggle, and completely symbolic of the age we live in.

11. The whole thing about that statue makes me sick. For everything he did for labor (and, frankly, what
labor did for him), and that's the tangible memory that someone comes up with. Disgusting.
