I do hope it totally misses you and the entire northeastern coast. Here in Florida we're getting a bit of rain and wind near the coast.

1. Tomorrow's forecast, oddly enough, is sunny and near ninety degrees

I'm going to do my grocery shopping a day early, including batteries for my radio and flashlights, and stock up on the important provisions -- water, booze, and birth control.

It rained like hell here earlier today, sounded like we were standing right next to a moving freight train. They're predicting rain and wind and likely power outages, but we rarely lose power here because it's a fairly new area and most of the cables are underground. We've also already had considerably flooding with all the storms we've already had, so we certainly don't need more rain. *sigh* I'm following the news and hoping for the best... *fingers crossed* :pals: :hi:

3. I'm inland (20 miles outside NYC in NJ)

I'm taking it seriously enough to understand that the wind could knock down trees, taking out power lines --- and no electricity.

Gotta get batteries for flashlights, hope the neighbors (apartment) don't use candles that set fire to this place, and get ice for stuff in freezer.

And filling up water bottles for something to drink as well as filling up the bath tub so I can flush the toilet for a few days.

5. Okay, help me out here: If the toilets aren't flushing, how does pouring water into them work?

7. Without a pump to replenish the water in the reservoir tank, you can'tq

flush and force the waste water out of the bowl. So you need an independent source of clean water to pour into the back of the toilet. You just don't flush with each visit. As I learned in California (1977) during their drought: If it's yellow, it's mellow. If it's brown, flush it down.

4. New York, Schmew York! I'm next to Jersey in PA, & I'm scared! Ivan almost flooded my house, with

HALF the predicted rainfall!!!

The upstate NY dams are being reduced into the river that can flood me!

6. looking forward to having Sunday off

If the subway gets closed down due to flooding I get to stay home!! We live in Brooklyn the problems here could be loss of public transit and trees down, maybe loss of power. On my way home last night I did some extra grocery shopping and will pick up a few extra things today.

My hope is that we will just get some nasty rain and have to stay inside for a day or two. If the forecast gets real bad I'll fill more jugs with water etc. I think we will be fine for a few days if worse comes to worse. A few people I work with are in the areas that might get hit really bad. One of the guys showed me a picture of how his street floods after a normal heavy rain he is staying with off the island with some friends till its over.

8. Non Perishables such as gallons of water, ready to make soup,

tins of canned food (tuna, ham), crackers, the types of things you would take camping. Hand-operated can opener - make sure you've got a sturdy one.
Flashlights, radio, blanket or two if it gets cold at night.

Down here the power outages can be weeks. Hopefully where you are the population is more dense and they'll get the power going again faster.

11. I don't have that confidence re NJ PSE&G--where I live

we sometimes lose power in a big rain....
I dread power outage cuz - what will I do without computer, radio, TV, phone ??
I might have to talk to my neighbors!

Actually every time we have an outage I do meet more neighbors, cuz we are all sitting outside on the stoops.
But that's been for a few hours. I really don't want to know what it's like to have no power for a week!

I will fill up the bathtub, I have lots of bottled water, batteries
I can't think of anything else I need to do. The waiting is hell.

Glad to have that tip about the water in the toilet - I also thot it went into the bowl!
