they are cutting the power to the elevators so people won't get stuck in them if the power goes out. Bloomberg also said that ConEd may cut the power if any lines are inundated with salt water.

The Chinese say "May you live in interesting times". I believe this qualifies. Who would think that we would experience a hurriquake.

I just don't think some people will be happy to try to manage those stairs.

They are talking about ConEd possibly cutting power to all of southern Manhattan to protect the cables and lines from salt water (inactive = much less damage).
Of course, the best bet is to stay put, but if they have to go to the bar, the climb back up to the room will sober 'em right up. :D

7. When my ex had the bar at the Jersey Shore, the power had gone out |
|
(mid-afternoon)which included the cash registers. Of course the coolers where the beers were were going to be the first to go. He announced to the extremely crowded bar that he was going to have to depend on their honesty and for that he would make all beer $1 and while the ice lasted mixed drinks were $2, including the scotch and other high-end liquors. Most of his crowd were firemen from NY and northern Jersey and school teachers on their last hurrah before school started. To show their appreciation they did enjoy and $10s and $20s were left on the bars with "no change required." People never cease to amaze me. No problems, everyone had a blast, candles were lit and because the juke box was out along with the kitchen, etc. some great harmony and great jokes were the entertainment. The ex said it was the best time he had ever had.
