Just as in 2007 and 2008 many (D) said they wanted to take their country back or wanted their country back. It wasn't offensive to "us" so such comments passed unnoticed. Actually, they're still made by some who consider Obama less a Hansen's Puppeteer (with all that "leading from behind") and more a puppet.

The idea that it's already populated by many people who disagree seemed to be as difficult to grasp for those DUers in 2007 and 2008 as TP people in 2011. The nameless other, the enemy that the country has to be taken back from, as Obama rightly pointed out, are also Americans.
