So what is the uproar over the term "blood libel" about? |
|
Forgive my ignorance, but I've never heard the term before, at least in any derogatory context. Something to do with Jews/Nazis?

2. I am probably going to flub this a little bit, but the term refers |
|
to religious ceremonies where the blood of children killed is used ritualistically. It is often used (wrongly) as being attributed to people of the Jewish faith.

7. "Blood libel" is a term that was used to justify pogroms against Jews |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 06:47 PM by derby378
It was a venomous smear against Jews in Europe, claiming they sought blood from Gentiles for some ridiculous ritual.
For Sister Sarah to employ that term to denote a "blood libel" against herself and others of her ilk is at best worthy of hails of derisive laughter, but also completely insensitive to the historic plight of Jews in Europe.

8. It was a lie that was used as an excuse to massacre Jews... |
|
My understanding is that this was used centuries ago. The lie was that Jews massacred Christian infants and drank their blood. It was called "blood libel". It's considered very offensive and derogatory.
