Remember when Texans made fun of Califorians suffering from
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 12:32 PM by cally
and energy shortfall? Remember when Texans wrote editorials and politicians argued that Californians didn't deserve federal FEMA support after our year of earthquakes, fires, mudslides, and other natural disasters. Well, I do and I suspect many Californians do also. I was outraged and I wondered where our national unity had gone.

I still wonder that. And I fully support helping Texans as much as possible with emergency aid. I fully support helping all those affected by the hurricanes. We are still one nation and in this together IMO.
e
on edit: This was in 2001 in the national press and in the local Texas press. I joined DU shortly after. It was when California had the "energy crisis". It's why I chose my DU name. I am not suggesting any DUer ridiculed California. Sorry my initial post was unclear.

16. I edited to make clear I was not referring to DUers
but to politicians, editorial writers, and pundits. I'm fairly amazed that so few remember because I remember vividly.

8. Both.
During the Texas-based Enron-induced energy crisis we had here in CA, we were the butt of a lot of "those wine-sipping, yuppie, hot-tubbing, Californians deserve everything that comes there way because they are energy hogs" cartoons, commentary, and general ridicule.

It was a bit distasteful to many of us Californians.

14. I was referring to Texas editorials, politicians, and letters to the
editor from Texans in our local papers. I never believed all Texans didn't support helping Californians. Many Californians were outraged at the time

15. Cally, I totally remember that --
it was a very ugly period, even here on DU (I was here).

I agree 100% that one State's disaster is a disaster for all Americans. I put the following up on my FB page yesterday, along with the story about the cuts to fire services:

"Gee, I bet ol' Rick is feelin' mighty stupid right about now. Typical -- scream bloody murder about "big government" and "taxes are too high" and then run to the Fed for $$$ when the inevitable happens. Psst, Rick -- THIS, my friend, is why I have zero problem paying my taxes -- I am an American and we take care of our own -- even a backwards douchbag like yourself. You're welcome."

19. I think we spent all our 'national unity' on 9/11.
Most people I know haven't been quite the same since then. There seems to be so much hatred and anger around all places I've been. News groups, PTA meetings, DU, weather forums - just nasty nasty comments and snark. It's like nobody know how to be civil to anyone anymore or to have empathy for any other living being.

We need to find it again, or this American ship is sunk - and it won't be entirely due to the GOP, but they are helping to blast holes in the ship.

21. yeah boy did we party
You're confusing politicians and dumb asses (like the Conn guy that started the other thread) with real people. How would you like it if I said all Californians are homophobes because that Prop passed? Guess by your logic all Californians are gay bashers.

Please refresh my memory and link to editorials by Texans stating that Californians don't deserve Federal disaster aid.
