Missouri town calls on KU to drop Jayhawks mascot
OSCEOLA, Mo. | City officials in Osceola, a southwest Missouri town of about 950 people, are asking the University of Kansas to drop its "Jayhawk" mascot because the name refers to a group of domestic terrorists that nearly destroyed the city 150 years ago.

In a resolution approved earlier this week, the Osceola Board of Alderman also asks the University of Missouri to educate Kansas on the history of the "Border War" and let people know there was more to it than William Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kan., in 1863.

Resentment still runs deep for residents of Osceola over the Sept. 22-23, 1861, siege by U.S. Sen. Jim Lane and a band of about 2,000 "Jayhawkers" that left a dozen men executed on the town square and the community itself a smoking ruin

"I grew up here, and it is all I heard about when I was attending grade school and high school," Mayor Larry Hutsler told the Columbia Daily Tribune. "Everyone knew who was responsible."

5. Yup.... not only in the deep south....

Just north of Kansas City, Jesse James is still regarded as a legendary "Robin Hood" kind of figure--though he earlier rode with William Quantrill and his band of murderous renegades--responsible for the Lawrence massacre, which itself was supposedly in retaliation for Osceola.

Geebus....

I should add to my sigline... Learn your history, progressives so that you may be prepared to counter the RW's bastardized version of same--and the attempt to exploit that new creation.

11. The collapse of the building holding female relative of the guerillas was the cause...
of the 2nd raid on Lawrence. Osceola was burned in 1861, the Lawrence Raid was 1863, the guerillas fuses were not that long.

That Jesse James is considerd a Robin Hood figure extends way beyond his stomping grounds and owes much more to late 19th century dime novels and later Hollywood films than regional politics.

As a historian on the topic, I would not fully trust anything Quantrill might have said. That man is the definition of an amoral sociopath.

Did you think I was somehow defending Quantrill? As a historian on the topic, I'd hope you would be more cautious in your interpretation of the written and verbal words of others.

Edited for a typo...

19. Nope. just clearing things up. You used the word "supposedly".
You said Quantrill "supposedly" cited Osceola as the cause for the Lawrence raid. I was disputing your statement with another source with the link I provided and I was disputing Quantill's statement by citing the chronology of the events as being nearly two years apart. If Quantrill said such a thing, I suggest it is to be taken with a grain of salt, at minimum. Again, I just wanted to clarify the historical facts.

Thanks for the tip. I will be more cautious when interpreting the written and verbal word of others. Especially yours.

9. In response, city officials in Lawrence, Kansas call on University of Missouri
to drop its "Tiger" mascot, because the name refers to a notorious Tamil terrorist
organization, responsible for countless atrocities in Sri Lanka and around the world.
Moreover, the Tamil Tigers are still active and are on US State Department list
of terrorist organizations.
