Michael Steele: "For the first time in a generation, we saw us." Er...WHAT?

Today, at a sprawling resort just outside Washington, Steele delivering a speech -- in his capacity as RNC chairman -- was essentially his last pitch to members before today's vote of the 168 committee members who, will determine his fate this afternoon.

***

But Steele is looking to be re-hired for this job, so he made sure to shower the members with praise.

"It does not get done without you, our state chairmen and our national committeemen and women," Steele said. He added, "You did not shrink from the challenge. You did not walk away from the opportunity. The effort of our party speaks for itself."

Sounding a bit like failed Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell (R), he said, "For the first time in a generation, we saw us. ... We drew in America. They responded to your voice; they responded to your efforts.

4. "We saw us" ???
"We drew in America".

Well, only if the "us" is composed of racist, homophobic, far right fundamentalist white people.

I certainly don't want to be included in that nightmare vision of America.

5. Part of the reason Boehner did not attend the memorial
in Tucson was so that he could campaign for Maria Cino to replace Steele.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) turned down an offer by President Barack Obama to travel on Air Force One to Arizona for a memorial service on behalf of the victims of Saturday’s shooting, a decision that has upset some Democrats.

Boehner is instead scheduled to attend a reception on Wednesday night on behalf of Maria Cino, a former top House GOP aide who is seeking the Republican National Committee chairmanship. Boehner is backing Cino’s challenge to current RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

Don't know much about her, but here's some info from Sourcewatch:

Very connected to Bush, Rove, etc.

Cheney also has been campaigning for her:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney will hold a fundraiser next week for Maria Cino, one of a handful of candidates running to replace Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele.

The fundraiser will be held at the home of Mary Matalin, according to an invitation.

Ed Gillespie, a former George W. Bush operative who, along with Karl Rove, helped found a pair of fundraising groups that were active in the 2010 midterms, will co-host the event.

The FrumForum on Wednesday posted an invitation to the fundraiser, which starts at $100 per guest.
