Whiskey bottles turn up where time capsules were supposed to be
NORTH PLATTE - The time capsules said to be hidden in the old Lincoln County jail are nowhere to be found, but two unlikely "treasures" were. Two empty Seagram's 7 bottles were pulled from the wreckage Saturday, after the last standing wall was torn down.
According to historic records, two time capsules, one dating back to 1933 and another from 1971, were buried somewhere within the building. The architectural documents that could have revealed their location were destroyed years ago in a fire, and the crew that supposedly placed the keepsakes are dead.
Twin Rivers Testing and Environmental scanned over the walls with an instrument designed to detect voids, but came up empty-handed. In July, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office opened the search up to the public, promising to award a key from the old jail to whoever could identify the location of the relics.
However, all that was left behind after demolition was a pile of bricks, dust and the whiskey bottles.
"They were right where we thought the time capsules would be," said Jerome Kramer, sheriff. "They were mortared into the wall."
