How to Escape from Zip Ties
In our How To Escape and Evade in an Urban Environment article, we briefly discussed escaping from zip ties.

There are quite a few hasty methods of illegal restraint, and zip ties are a method that’s available to any would-be kidnapper.

A few of the other methods seen are duct tape, rope and phone cord, but with a little education you’ll see that all of these methods can easily be defeated.

There are two things you’ll need in any escape situation, and without these two things, nothing we’ll show you will work.

Those two things are time and opportunity. You’ll have to first have the time to be able to put one of these escape methods into action and the opportunity to do so.

Your captors are most likely not going to have the resources or the patience to keep eyes on you constantly, and when they don’t, it’s time to make your move.

1. I guess this video is why police use two zip ties linked together
It's easier to slip out of a single tie or saw it off in the gap between one's wrists, but tightening two separate ties around each wrist makes this simple escape impossible. The ties have incredible tensile strength and cannot be stretched to the breaking point.

The only way to open them without cutting is to use a steel pick to push the locking tooth back from the ratchet, a mean trick even for Bond... James Bond.

4. Go to the link
They show you how to get out of two zip ties. Looks like it is not impossible, but rather easy.

5. Isn't that a great way to go from being detained to arrested?
Won't the cops already have your ID?

7. At the very least if the lack of blood circulation
to your hands has become serious, breaking out does not have to equate to
resisting arrest, but saving yourself from a serious health risk. You can still keep
your hands behind your back.

12. Metal between two layers of clothing.
Foil or window screen, your choice. The thick baker's foil works better than anything, followed immediately by aluminum or steel window screen doubled up.

It shorts out the probes with something far more conductive than your body. You'll feel a pinch, but nothing close to incapacitating.

13. I'd rather know how to protect yourself against a cop beating, without
getting more, like Rodney King.

15. Great Videos. Love these guys.
I especially like the Friction Saw method.

The Zip Ties used by Law Enforcement appear to be much broader (and stronger) than the ones used in their videos,
and thus harder to break, but the Friction Saw (and shim) should work on those too.

Replacing Shoe Laces with Para-Cord ("550 cord") is a great idea for hikers, campers, hunters, or anybody who is in wilderness
or other places where survival can become an issue.
Even boaters on a "3 hour cruise" might find "550 cord" useful.

And always remember:
The cops are there to "Protect & Serve."
